Pie Ranch Barn Dance / Año Nuevo State Park

  • No location was chosen

  • *** UPDATE: There is no space at Pie Ranch for July - this ride has been moved BACK to August.... ***

    Saturday

Meet at Daly City BART at 9:00am. Ride to Pie Ranch from Daly City BART (approx 53 miles with some climbing over Montara Mt) and lots of stops to geek out over rock formations and geologic sights.

    Sunday

Ride 1 mile down Highway 1 to explore the Año Nuevo State Park and check out the elephant seals. Ride back to Daly City BART (or Redwood City Caltrain if you desire) via La Honda Road and the San Andreas Fault (60 miles total, hella hilly!). [Originally posted as continuing down to Santa Cruz (approx 22 miles total). Bus back to San Jose, Caltrain to SF. You can do this if you wish!).

    Important info:

    • Your safety is your own responsibility. Please ensure you and your bike are in good condition the day of the ride, and bring helmet/lights/water/spare tire/tools/sunscreen/layers.
    • Follow the rules of the road: http://www.sfbike.org/?bikelaw
    • Print out the route map and directions in advance in case the group gets split up. Don't rely on cell phone reception or assume that the group will ride together at all times!
    • Bring camping gear, potluck food and cash ($20-30) for Pie Ranch

    Pie Ranch Barn Dance

    http://www.pieranch.org/2013/07/july-20th-work-day-barn-dance/

On the third Saturday of each month, Pie Ranch hosts a Community Work Day, potluck dinner, and rollicking barn dance in the roadside barn.

    • Join in the potluck at 6pm and dancing at 7pm until about 10pm.
    •  Please bring your own dishes and utensils for the potluck. Every bit of clean up help is greatly appreciated!
    • To keep an inclusive, family atmosphere, the potluck and barn dance are alcohol-free events.

    Año Nuevo State Park

    http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=523

This park is a major gathering area for northern elephant seals, which may be seen year-round. The elephant seals return to Año Nuevo's beaches during the spring and summer months to molt and can be observed during this time through a permit system.

Kelly Munoz fr. Pie Ranch: "Jered forwarded me your email regarding cycling in. We no longer offer camping at the farm but do encourage folks to come out to the work day & barn dance. Perhaps you are referring to a group that's coming for the day. We have a culinary class starting at 3 so the outdoor kitchen is not available."
Camping available at Costanoa and Butano.

Unbelievable. In July the Ranch is cancelled at the last moment & the same thing happens again. I thought the Ranch knew we were coming this weekend? To think I bought a tent & the Al A Mode. I' m going North.

Well, THAT's a bummer! I think I may do the ride anyway and just peddle all the way down to Santa Cruz straight away (72 miles?).

Franke, hope your move goes smoothly this weekend.

Pie Ranch is beautiful. Camping on a comfy lawn area. Last time I was there, the one shower was rather pitiful. (It's been over a year, they may have "upgraded") It's not set up as a full "campground." Farmstand is open 10-6 to buy produce, flour, eggs. Not sure if we can use kitchen/oven b/c of barn dance/potluck. Anyone else know?

I don't mean to be obtuse, but what besides change of clothes, tent, footprint, sleeping bag, camping pad, potluck food (for how many?) place setting and $30 + extra for transportation/contingency should we bring? (typical biking stuff extra)

    Will there be shower facilities?
    Anything else useful to know?

Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious. Thanks.

Did you find out the camping fee? I stayed there with a group before, and it was really nice! There's a soft lawn to camp on. The shower (1) is sketchy, but the ranch is beautiful. There's a wood-fired pizza oven on a covered patio area, so we can get as gourmet as they allow us to be.

Yes, it's a beautiful area there. When I talked to them I think she mentioned $12 for camping. They talked about keeping the barn dance 'family-like', so they limit the number of guests. According their website barn dance and farm sound just great.

Hey Lincoln, you're more than welcome to join me, but I'm not going to do a long ride (prob 35 miles?). I'm meeting up with the group at 9 at Daly City and then dropping off at Half Moon Bay to meet Tim. We plan on spending time at the beach and then driving home, so I wouldn't be able to accompany you back home.

Just as well the tour/ride has been rescheduled. I'm going to play taxi tomorrow for a friend who's car broke down recently.

    Hi Frankie and all,
I just called Pie Ranch about camping. They asked to email them in advance for group reservations. She also mentioned a camping fee. The woman to contact is Kelly, her email: [masked]

See you all at the Barn Dance.

I signed up for the Aug date. Not sure I'm ready for this ride this weekend post STP. :P

    • Frankie M

Sheryl did STP and is coming for Saturday only, heading over to Redwood City (I think) before the rest of us arrive at Pie Ranch.

Sounds terrific! Not sure how I'm going to pack down a potluck meal on the bike...ideas?

    July 8, 2013

    • Frankie M

A big ol' tupperware of a hearty side dish (lentil salad, roasted veggies, coleslaw) would be easy enough.

  • Frankie M

I'd love to do this ride on the 3rd Saturday of July - any takers? Jean, do you mind if I take your idea and run with it (unless you can make July 20th ish)?

    July 8, 2013

    • Jean

Hi Frankie! It's been a super hectic summer for me so if you're still interested I can make you the host of this event instead and you can move the date to July.
