Labor Day Weekend Amtrak to Truckee & Ride Around Lake Tahoe~CC or Camping Trip

  • to

  • Emeryville Amtrak

5885 Horton Street, Emeryville, Ca (map)

    37.840675 -122.291389

  • Either at the train station or at a carpool meetup spot to be determined
  • It's called "America's Most Beautiful Ride" for a reason!

72 miles, 3800 feet climb, 6500 feet altitude

I'm choosing Labor Day Weekend so people don't have to take off from work.  This is the best weekend for accommodation selection and availability at the moment.

The beautiful Zephyr train to Truckee does NOT allow bikes AT ALL, boxed or not, but there are enough drivers who are willing to bring up the bikes and camping gear, if needed. The train is 43.00 or 38.70 with AAA discount.

I'm hoping for a few people to join me for a one-way train trip, currently 43.00, and a ride back with the drivers on Monday.

We now have at least 2 trainsters!

Sat: 9 AM Emeryville Zephyr to Truckee, currently 43.00.  Arrive 2:30 PM   Meet the drivers and drive 12miles to Tahoe City motel or campsite.  There are 2 campsites in Tahoe City, subject to availability.

Hike Eagle Creek Falls @ 2.5 RT miles to the lake.

Dinner together Tahoe City at Hacienda del Lago, Lakefront Mexican.

Sun: Ride 72 miles around Lake Tahoe.  Dinner together in Tahoe City or camp BBQ at a campsite (there's a Safeway in Tahoe City)

Mon: Breakfast on your own.  Train riders and all carpool back home.  Option of taking a short ride along the Truckee River prior to departure.

    Lodging options:

2 day minimum!  Please book your own room or coordinate with someone to share an accommodation.

    http://www.tahoecityinn.com

    http://www.peppertreetahoe.com

    http://www.americasbestvalueinn.com/bestv.cfm?idp=1013

http://www.mothernaturesinn.com [masked] per person, double occupancy, includes tax)  I know this adorable inn and have reserved two Double Bed rooms and one King.  There are more Kings and Queens available.  1 week cancellation policy.  I have reserved a two bed, two person room for myself, but you can change over the other rooms to your credit card, under Dalton.

    Closest camping options:

William Kent Campground (530)[masked]  (2 miles away)

Tahoe State Recreation Area (530)[masked]  (in town)

It's important to note that this ride is at 6500 ft. but we'll have a day to acclimate.

Hydration and electrolyte replacement are very important!  Helmets and spare tube required.  You must have power bars, snacks, a bottle of water and a bottle of electrolytes at all times. We'll make plenty of stops as needed.

Please put in the comment section your preference for train or carpool and how many bikes/people you can take.  We will consolidate the cars once we know how many we have.

    Hi Everyone,

I HATE to do this, but I am canceling the Tahoe trip due to the unpredictability of air quality. Some may disagree with me, but the fire is only 30% contained and I spoke with our innkeeper just now and she said the smoke is off and on depending on the wind.

The good news for me, Marcus and Andy, is that despite the fact there are no refunds later than 1 week prior, they are giving us a rain check to reschedule. This will likely involve taking off a Friday. I hope to schedule 9/20-9/22 before risk of snow.

The other GREAT thing is that Amtrak will fully refund you or give a travel voucher IF you call 24 hrs in advance which means before 9am tomorrow. You have to go through a menu and persist until you get a live person. Just say "customer service" a bunch of times.

I DO hate to disappoint everyone, but whether or not you have asthma, it's a huge ride and heavy breathing will be involved.

    August 29, 2013

    • Franny

See if you can get a rain check, too.

If you still decide to go, I'm sorry I can't offer my leadership, but enjoy yourselves.

Please let me know you got this.

Franny, as much as I really want to do this ride i have to pass. I've been keeping an eye on the smoke and it seems to be getting worse. I've been watching the Sunnyside web cam and spoke with some people in Tahoe City and they say it's pretty nasty. Might be ok to camp but to do a ride and breath heavy is not the best for me. I would love to do this ride again sometime if you put another one together though. Have a nice weekend!

    • Franny

Hi Johnny, yes it's very disappointing. We'll just have to see which way the wind is blowing Sunday. Check out the Sept. 14th weekend ride to Pescadero. Maybe that'll work for you. And lots of other stuff on Bike the Bay and Bay Area Cycling. Have a good weekend!

Greetings all - just booked the 2 nights at William Kent campground (site near but not next to bathroom). Total price is $54 for up to 6 people/2 cars. As I'm taking the train up, that means i can support 5 people/2 cars more on this reservation. If interested, respond to this comment.

Thanks, for confirming, Zuzana. Site supports 6 people and 2 cars. Since you and Lincoln joined early and I won't have a car (taking train up), you both can have a parking spot or feel free to carpool and then if Hazel or others join, they can have one. We'll all sort that out when the whole group meets at time/place on Saturday that Franny previously posted. Looking forward to the trip too!

Anyone have a bike spot left on their car? He'd like to take the train. Please contact Shaun Houlilan here.

One last comment on air quality: prior to starting my 2 day, 40+ mile hike on TRT, I did a bit of research on air quality via the link below. Even though my visibility was 2.5 miles at best, it smelled like I was hiking by constant campfires on the first day and I saw particulates floating by my headlamp while cooking dinner on the first night, I felt/had no issues over 36 hours. No coughing, dryness, itchy eyes, nothing. Neither did this thru hiker in his 50s I came across and he had been hiking for 2 days more. That's said, its best to read and abide by federal recommendations if you are at all unsure/concerned. Read answer to: Can I tell whether or not the air is healthy by visibility?

here: http://www.meetup.com...... These are all the 4 meetups joining us. There is a woman, Cristina, that is hosting Sabrina at a house. If all you need is a car spot, let's see what we can do. I'll make the first attempt on all these sites.

Sabrina, try all the options in the event post including hotels. It is late in the game. I haven't heard of any other camp sites being organized except Dan M's. Try the local hostel, too. Good luck. Best to plan about 2 months in advance for holiday trips. Hope you can make it!

Thanks Franny. Tried to contact this Dan M. but never heard back. In any case. I am all set! Staying in a home with Christina and her friend. Warm bedroom and my own bathrooom. And it's all FREE!!!See you at the hiking and outings. Thanks again for replying to my inquiry. It will be awesome trip and I can't wait!

Update on air quality: I spoke to the inn keeper and campgrounds and there are no plans to close anything down. The air quality has been excellent to hazy. It all depends on the way the wind blows. We still have 6 days to monitor the situation and we can adjust our riding and hiking plans accordingly, but I won't be canceling this trip. Everything is booked up and there are no refunds. I have alternative activities in mind such as hiking Shirley Canyon at Squaw, and many other options.

  • David

Hello, no train ride for me and no camping for me neither. I hope to be driving starting from San Jose along Hwy680 to Hwy80 and then to Hwy89. I have one extra bike rack on my SUV if anyone needs a lift/carpool. I've made reservations at the Tahoe City Inn for 2 people just in case someone else wants to share the cost. The total cost for 2 nights is $236; if someone splits it with me, then it will be $118 for the other person. I hope to start very early on Saturday morning driving because I want to make an interesting side trip to the annual Ribfest in Reno, NV. Anyone want to join me?
    :-)

    August 14, 2013

    • David

Mary-Lynn, After the Ribfest I hope to meetup with everyone at the Truckee Amtrak station at 2:30pm; hopefully you will be there. After that we all drive to Tahoe City (15mi) to our Inn (for others it will be a campground). If I don't see you at the Truckee Amtrak station, then I will meet you at the Inn.

      August 23, 2013

    • Franny

David, this is a good idea. I would like everyone to optimally meet at the train station so we can make our game plan, even if some drivers are not meeting trainsters. Otherwise, we'll be all over the place. That way we can exchange info, numbers, etc. Thanks for that consideration.

      August 23, 2013

  • Franny

    Hi Cyclists~

We're about a week and a half away and I want to be sure everyone has a game plan for getting up to Tahoe and a place to stay.

We will ultimately meet at the Truckee Amtrak station at 2:30 PM (assuming the train is on schedule.) Then, we'll go from there. I am releasing the room(s) that have not been rented at Mother Nature's Inn tomorrow, Thursday. Franny

    August 21, 2013

  • Andrew

Hoping someone has room for another bike. Ideally coming from the peninsula (or anywhere that can/will pass through Redwood City) and is staying at or near Mother Nature's Inn.

Message me if you might be able to help.

    August 14, 2013

    • David

Hello Andrew, I am planning to leave very early on Saturday morning for the annual Ribfest in Nevada as a side trip. If you would like to carpool, then I will be in Redwood City at 7am-ish at the latest. Let me know what you decide.

      August 18, 2013

    • Andrew

Thanks Franny, David. I'm going to back out of this. Work deadlines are getting tighter than I expected.

      August 20, 2013

  • Franny

David and Andrew, can you work on a carpool together?

    August 17, 2013

  • Franny

Hi Cyclists~We're getting closer to this "epic weekend" and I'll want to be sure you finalize carpools among yourselves. Marcus, Dan and I have claimed bike spots and gear in Marcus's car. We are meeting at Amtrak at 8:30 before our 9:00 AM departure.

Also, I want to be sure everyone has a place to stay. I am still holding two rooms (one with a king, one with two queens) at Mother Nature's Inn, but I'll want to release them ASAP if no one wants to book them.

Everyone will meet in Truckee at 2:30 on Sat. to regroup, and make our game plan for the rest of the day which will include the hike, dinner, and setting up camp for the campers.

Keep your eye out for further information here and through e-mail.

  • Johnny

Hi Franny, I will be driving up on Friday with some friends for the weekend. Not sure if I can do the hike and the ride the next day...so for right now i'm in for the ride only on Sat. I wanted to meet everyone Sat morning for the ride though. Do we have a meeting spot for Sat morning?

    August 14, 2013

    • Franny

Johnny. Remember, the hike is 2.5 miles. Just a short one to acclimate. The ride is Sunday not Saturday. It will leave from Tahoe City around 7:30, starting point will be posted later. Hope to see you. Just follow comments and emails for updates.

      August 14, 2013

    • Johnny

Great! Thanks. I will try to make the hike as well. If not see you on Sunday!

      August 14, 2013

Hello, can you tell the details. Where we are meeting? What time? Is the ride on Sat or Sun? Thanks.

      August 14, 2013

    • Franny

Then we plan to meet with everyone at the Truckee train station at 2:30 Sat. and drive to the motels/campsites. The hike is Sat., the ride is Sunday, and return is Monday-everyone by car. There are plenty of drivers. Let me know if you have any more questions. Looking forward to meeting everyone and enjoying Tahoe!

      August 14, 2013

Sabrina is not coming. She had signed up on two sites. Now a camping spot has opened up for Dan.

Hi cyclists~As I mentioned to Cristina from Berkeley Bicycle, everyone should book their own accommodations and talk to each other about sharing campsites or double bed hotel rooms if you're on a budget. I would act sooner than later as it is Labor Day weekend.

More to come as we approach the date. Leave me an email or message with any questions.

Hey all - anyone up for doing some ramp-up rides for this? Furthest Ive biked in 1 day is 50 miles, but am also hoping to work my way up to 100 by end of the summer (goal is SF to Dillon beach...w overnight on way in Stinson Beach)

Dan, I do a lot of mid-mileage rides, 30-60 range. Today, we did 40 miles with 3700+ feet gain. Join this group and check out today's ride and past rides. I organize a lot of them: http://www.meetup.com...

Hi cyclists. Just an update: Two of us have bought our Amtrak tickets. One car is full with 3 bikes. I know of at least two other drivers, each who have one extra bike spot, so if you want to join us on the train, I'll hook you up. I'll post periodic updates and please leave me messages here if you have any questions.

Train ticket prices will go up no doubt.

At this time, between 3 meet-ups, we have about 14 people going.

I'll keep you posted, write a messages if you have any questions.

Just bought my Amtrak ticket, 38.70 with AAA discount! I think we'll have enough car/bike transport (I have room for one more bike.) You never know when the rates will go up, but they will!
