Veterans Day Weekend at Point Reyes, Nov 9-11

I have made some arrangements for some campsites in Olema for Sat Nov 9, and have talked to Point Reyes Hostel about Sunday Night, right now they can accommodate us, so depending on the response I will set up something for there, tomorrow. My plans is to leave GG Bridge cafe early, like 8 or 9 am, go over Mt Tam via the Panoramic Hgwy, descend the Bolinas Fairfax Rd and head up 1 to Olema, that is Saturday. Sunday would be a bike ride up the coast, or beach combing or whatever. Head back Nicasso Valley Rd., Monday, maybe take the Larkspur Ferry from San Rafael. Those that can't do 3 days can come for Olema camping Saturday night and head back Sunday. Who's in for this? Oh, and I need the name of that website where you can schedule weather conditions for specific weekends if anyone can help with that?

A good tough ride up MtTam then nice desent into Bolinas for lunch. Ride to Olema had some steep grades. We set up our camp then had a fun dinner at nearby restaurant , ride back along STaylor Park was a beauty. Coffee in Fairfax. It was a very good ride/ camping for a one-nighter. Hope everyone got back to RC ok.

If there were a noon or 1PM contingent departing from the GG that would work a lot better for me. That thirty miles to Olema could still be done before sundown.

Hey Eric, it doesn't look like much of a turnout for a pm departure. We will leave GGB about 9. Should we still expect you in Olema late Sat afternoon ?

Unfortunately I have a hard deadline for Tuesday. I've decided that I won't be able to make it if I join in on this trip.

Hey Stuart, Cal Train gets into the city at 8:36 in the morning, Jim and I may be a little late to the bridge , but not by much.

According to the 15-day forecast by AccuWeather, that weekend should be sunny but cool, highs 57 to 58 degrees F, lows 44 to 45.

I think I'm up for riding up from San Jose on Saturday, hanging out for some S'mores, then riding back home on Sunday.

9am at the Golden Gate would be a little early for me coming from south bay, but I could certainly arrange meeting up with you at Olema.

All right then Eric, very ambitious of you! I will just plan on seeing you in Olema. I will get you the name and location later.

Thanks. That's ok. The other 88 mile ride I do sometimes goes over Highway 9 and back over on Eureka Canyon :).

I created 2 possible route maps from GG Bridge Cafe to Olema campground on MapMyRide.com. This one takes the Panoramic Highway: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/313177647 .
This one takes Sir Francis Drake Blvd: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/313168299 . The second route has 2 climbs with a total of 1299 feet of gain on the route, avoiding Mt Tam. The first route has 5 climbs with a total gain of 2260 feet climbing on the route. Loaded with camping equipment, I'd rather take the low route unless there's a compelling reason to avoid Sir Francis Drake Blvd. According to Google Maps, both routes take about 3.5 hours by average cyclists but I doubt that they're equally difficult for us. I'd expect to take longer when loaded for camping, especially for those like me who are new to self-supported bike camping.

I checked with the campground about animal-resistant food storage at the campsite to protect against rodents, raccoons, etc. They answered: "Hello,
There are no animal-resistant food storage boxes at the sites. We recommend you put your food away in the car. Thank you, JUDY Olema Campground (415)[masked]" So if you plan to bring food to the site, be sure to have a resistant food sack or canister.

I wouldn't let this weigh on your mind too much. Options for food are plentiful out there, eat all your food for dinner and buy more for breakfast. If they don't have containment maybe that's because they don't have a problem. We can always hang a panier from a tree, or stand an RV on end and hang it from the rear axel, my personal favorite.

Thanks for all your input Stanley, I've made comments below. We will work out the details as the time comes closer. We have two campsites in Olema Saturday night and half the Bunkhouse at Point Reyes (for 10) so there is plenty of room for more!

For those of us arriving from distant locations, an 8am or 9am start would be difficult. I'd be coming from Santa Cruz via Highway 17 bus to San Jose and CalTrain from San Jose to SF. I'd have to get to the Santa Cruz Metro bus station on my loaded bike well before sunrise to arrive at the San Francisco station and bike ride to GG Bridge by 8 or 9.

    Other opinions, anyone?

See my note below, i'm fine with seperate groups although I would like to check in Sat just make sure everyone is on track. What i have done before for early starts from the city is stay at the Fort Mason HI Hostel. It's $25 and pretty convienient.

Would it be possible to provide route info for the ride (relative speed, steepness of hills, etc)? Just want to make sure I can keep up with everyone before signing up. Thanks!

Do you do much climbing in your daily riding?

      October 21, 2013

    • Stanley S.

Take a look at the route map links in my posting. If we have a group that takes the Sir Francis Drake route, I doubt that anyone would have much difficulty. Even if you have to stop for a break on the hill climbs, we'll all wait for everyone to catch up at the top of the hill, at least I would.

I looked at the Google map with its street view. A portion of the Sir Francis Drake route is on multi-use (no cars) paved trails. The route looks quite nice with a mix of suburban riding and rural riding. It doesn't have the panoramic views of the Bay Area from atop Mt. Tam, but it's not a boring route. I've never been there myself, either route, but read this blog by someone who has done Mt. Tam: http://weliketobike.com/trails-2/marin-county-trails/ .

Perhaps the group could split into two: one taking the Sir Francis Drake route and the other the challenging Mt. Tam route.

The Larkspur ferry ride looks good. Read the story about it at that same web site: http://weliketobike.com/2011/11/07/larkspur/ , especially about protecting your bike from damage on the ferry.

By what route will you ride from GG Bridge to Panoramic Highway? I'm trying to map the entire ride and compute the elevation profile.

    October 21, 2013

    • Chris L.

Hi Stan, The route would through sausilito to Mill Valley,Marion out of Mill Valley to Edgewood out of Mill Valley to Panoramic, your computer may not get you there because Edgewood turns into single track for a short distance. If you find another route that works i'm happy to consider it, my computer is old, if I can't turn the pedals it says find another hill. Please share if you map it out, I am sure others will find it interesting.
