Thanks Sheryl for all your work and planning putting this trip together. It was one of the most fun events I have ever done!
It turned out to be a good bit more of a workout than I thought it would be. A great group of people made it even better. A varied tour of multiple counties and terrains.

Ha, even the mighty Jim was not unscathed by those hills! I'm taking Ashmi's advice to add more teeny weeny gears to my trusty steed.

Has everyone already agreed and prepaid for lodging at the Good Nite Inn? Or have some of us found lodging elsewhere nearby on the first night? I did some research on YELP and I saw over 6 years of bad reviews; that concerns me.

    February 14, 2013

    • David

I will be riding with everyone on Saturday morning starting from Tiburon Ferry Terminal, but for the first night lodging at a hotel 1 block away from Good Nite Inn; that way it will be very easy to join back with the group at 9am on Sunday morning. As for Sunday night I plan to lodge with everyone at Motel 6 - Napa. I have just sent my deposit via Paypal.

      February 14, 2013

    • Sheryl

Okay, I'll put you on the list for Sunday. :-)

Will the ferry be able to handle all our bikes?

    February 13, 2013

    • JoAnn

should be able to if its the same kinda ferry like the one to Sausalito

      February 13, 2013

    • Sheryl

Bikes are accepted on a first-come first serve basis. I told them how many people were coming and they said we should be fine.

Wish I could, but weekend is already booked.
BE CAREFUL crossing the railroad tracks at Hwy 29 and Whitehall Lane, just south of St. Helena. It's the #1 spot for bike accidents in the county.
I've worked a lot with the Napa Valley Vine Trail. (I'm a Planner) http://vinetrail.org/ They deserve your support! Visualize a class 1 bike path all the way from Calistoga to Vallejo...

    • Sheryl

Thanks, Rob. I appreciate the tip!

      February 14, 2013

Do you know a good place where I could rent a bike for the trip ? My current bike might be too old and too squeaking to handle the ride ...

    February 13, 2013

    • Sheryl

      Hey Thibault,

      February 14, 2013

    • Sheryl

I would try Pacific Bikes 345 4th St San Francisco, CA 94107. They have nice road bikes to rent. Also, my boyfriend rented his last year from Solano Ave Cyclery. I think they since moved from Albany to N Berkeley. Def. call up bike shops. A lot of them rent bikes!

Regarding camping: In the summer, Bothe-Napa is quite nice. We've camped there a couple of time, NorCal BTC events I organized. Also, we camped in Napa at the Skyline Wilderness Park. It's not scenic, but it is pretty good for groups, and there are stores nearby for food. If anyone organizes a summer ride in the Napa Valley, these might be good options. (I'll be traveling this weekend, so I can't join y'all on this one.)

    Hi All,

I was looking at accommodations in Napa and everything looks pricey. The Motel 6 in Napa looks like its the most affordable.
http://www.hotels.com/ho222575/motel-6-napa-napa-united-states/ It's $79-89 per room and fits up to 4 people (per room). I was thinking we could book a block of rooms and then ride trails/explore wineries by day and use the hotel as a base to sleep/leave stuff. Let me know if this sounds okay or if you guys have other suggestions re: housing/trails/wineries.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

Friday Feb 15: Meet at Richmond BART and bike (35 miles) to Napa
Saturday Feb 16: Bike to Yountville, St. Helena and Velo Vino (bike friendly winery)?
Sunday Feb. 17: Loop to Lake Hennessey?
Monday Feb. 18: Bike back home to Richmond BART

Is this park on our route? It has camping. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is operated by the Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District in partnership with the Napa Valley State Parks Association.

The Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District and the Napa Valley State Parks Association took over operation of Bothe-Napa Valley State Park and the adjacent Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park on April 1, 2012. The park offers family, group and walk/ride-in camping, picnicking, many miles of trails for hiking, mountain bicycling and horseback riding, a swimming pool, pioneer cemetery and Native American Plant Garden. Camping reservations may be made at www.ReserveAmerica.com. T
The adjacent Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park is generally open weekends and by arrangement during the week, for mill tours and demonstrations.

More information about both parks can be found at www.napavalleystateparks.org, or by calling[masked]

    • Sheryl

Thanks, Michael! Awesome research. I think it may be a little too cold to camp. The group may want to go again in the summertime. I found really cheap hotels to stay at (that still have good reviews) to accommodate those on a budget. :-)

      January 22, 2013

  • Liam

I have toured to Both Napa Valley State Park from my house in Novato. Nice ride through Sonoma and Napa. The park is located between St. Helena and Calistoga at the top of the Napa Valley. Its about 55 miles from Novato. The cost is about $5 per person for hikers and bikers and I am sure this time of year you will not need reservations. There are showers and in the summer there is a pool for swimming. The pool makes it a great summer time spot. They don't have a designated hiker biker camp grounds, they just give you a regular camp sitet. Camping this time of year may be a little too cold for me but it is a great summer time get away.

    • Sheryl

Thanks, Liam. Great idea! Like you said, I'm afraid it may get too chilly. Maybe we can do a repeat in the summer, though. :-)

Bummer! Looks like something came up and I can't make it that weekend. Hope you all have great weather and a great trip.

Hi All! I was hoping to organize this trip last year, but got bogged down by work stuff. I still want to bike to Napa and back. I think it would be a lot of fun! I suggest President's Day weekend. I will post details soon, but if anyone's interested in helping research routes/places to stay, I welcome your input!
