Island Adventure #2 - Vashon Island - Island Center Forest Hike

We had so much fun on our previous Island Adventure we must try another one.  We will have to take cars across for this though so car pooling is advised.  We can figure this out depending where you are coming from.

Let's hike Vashon Island's Island Center Forest and then explore the town and see what it has to offer.  If anybody knows Vashon and has suggestions let us know.

ISLAND CENTER FOREST

Located in the center of Vashon Island, Island Center Forest is a 363-acre working forest and nature preserve that is managed to demonstrate sustainable forest management while protecting and restoring the health of the site's habitat. The property is owned and managed by King County Parks in collaboration with community partners who make up the Friends of Island Center Forest, a diverse group that includes the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust, Vashon Forest Stewards, Vashon–Maury Island Audubon, equestrians, and outdoor enthusiasts, among many other community members.

Island Center Forest features various forest stands, the Mukai Pond and Meadowlake wetlands, and meadows and forms the headwaters of Judd Creek. Island Center Forest provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including more than 70 bird species.

There are more than nine miles of trails that are used by hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers. The wetlands are popular for bird watching and wildlife photography.

Dogs allowed on leash.

Another fun island get away. A ferry ride takes you to another land. The trails in Island Center Forest were in pretty good shape ( a little -or a lot in one spot - of mud), not too strenuous and, if you take a long a map provided at the trailhead, fairly easy to follow. So after nice hike through the woods, a trip into Vashon for lunch we were ready to go esplore more. We headed to Point Robinson Lighthouse to check it out and had a little beach time as well.
For the record, it never rains on these islands, only a little moist sea breeze to keep you cool.
I had a blast with everybody, thanks for coming with a little island attitude and I look forward to planning another island adventure soon.

Park and ride lot is the one on the south side of the mall where the buses go. Park on the side nearest the freeway. The directions given from meetup take you to the old park and ride on the north side of the mall. Text me tomorrow if you can't find me.

    Kathy,

The address you provide for the Northgate Park & Ride is incorrect and will actually leave people in the parking lot of Best Bu/Target on the other side of the mall. I work across from this Park & Ride and drive this route often. The lot (s) next to are close to the corner of 1st Ave and 100th St. near the buses.

I think this is the lots you are thinking of. Take a look at the map and you may see what I mean.

Any idea what time you would get there? It would be much closer for me to take the ferry from Pt Defiance

Can take 2 people and possible one other dog. My dog is pretty agreeable in sharing space with another.

I can take one dog-less person--two if you don't mine sitting with a pretty sled dog who will be well harnessed in the back seat. She is friendly to people but not other dogs in close proximity.

    • Susan B

Hi Pauline - I am dog-less and would enjoy sitting next to your sled dog. Thanks for driving. Susan

    • Pauline S

Hi Susan, I'm sorry for the delay. I am dealing with family issues. If there is only the two of us, you can sit in the front seat ;) But you are still welcome to sit with the dog if we are taking another person.

Sounds fun! I can take one or two more, depending on the size of your dog :)
