Road Trip - Ginkgo Petrified Forest - and other Desert Hikes

I am planning a weekend of east of the mountain hikes.  Come and spend the weekend and do them all, or choose one or two to do.  You are responsible for finding your own accommodation

Hikes start at about 10 am at the trailhead. About a. 3 hr drive from Edmonds area.

PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION IN ITS ENTIRETY AND THE ACCOMPANYING LINKS SO SEE IF THIS HIKE IS APPROPRIATE BEFORE YOU RSVP

The old highway from Vantage, an old settlers' road, drops down a steep canyon to a crossing of the Columbia River--before the Wanapum Dam went in, the road crossed the river here. Now the roadway simply disappears into the river. Still, from this route, you can enjoy outstanding views of the Columbia River as it rolls through the basalt canyon.

Just a few pix to whet your appetite. More to come after the weekend when I have full computer access. Great day.

The Wild Horses Monument looks like a great side trip after we have done wandering through the petrified forest trails. Thanks for the info Brigitte.

Let's meet at Gingko Petrified Forest using these directions at 10am. Bring lunch, tick spray. you know the drill.
    Driving Directions:
From Ellensburg, drive east on Interstate 90 to exit 136 for Huntzinger Road. At the end of the exit, turn left and drive 1 mile before turning turn right on Recreation Road. Continue 0.8 mile on Recreation Road (also known as Old Highway 10), which used to be the crossing of the Columbia River, nearly to the road end. Park on the left where you see the trail/old jeep track heading up the slope. If you reach the barrier signs in the roadway, you have driven 100 yards too far.
    Cell #[masked], blue Hyundai Tucson.
Drive safe and hope I-90 construction doesn't delay things. See you in the morning.

We were just there over Easter weekend. Hiked the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge and the Billy Clap Lake Wildlife Area. Saw many birds, deer and coyote.
Do stop at Wild Horses Monument, just after I90 crosses Wanapum Lake. It's unofficial/native title is "Grandfather cuts loose the ponies". No rattlesnakes yet. But lots of tumbleweeds. Enjoy!

I am taking my Penthouse (e.g. great hard-sided pop up trailer with full kitchen and furnace) for the three day hike series. There is room for one guest (a twin sized bed) per night. Will leave Thursday and stay at Umtanum in Yakima Canyon that night, then will probably stay at Wanapum State Park near Ginko Friday night and at Icycle Creek the Saturday night.

Let me know if you'd like to put dibs on that twin sized bed. I sleep with my four shih tzus in the full sized bed, but another dog could go on the floor or the twin bed.

I will be doing this hike in a few weeks and am interested in hearing about the hike when you return. Would you mind letting me know about it? Thanks!
