The North Vancouver Community Arts Council and the Toronto International Film Festival Group proudly present the North Shore International Film Series.
One of the most anticipated Nordic films of the year, Baltasar Kormákur’s The Deep recounts a modern myth that happens to be true. In 1984, a fishing boat goes down miles off the coast of Iceland, in one of the most forbidding seas on the planet, leaving the fishermen at the mercy of frigid and turbulent waters. Miraculously, one of the crew, Gulli, survives despite being exposed to temperatures in which most people wouldn’t have lasted a few minutes.
Gulli is suddenly a national hero, a symbol of endurance for a country whose inhabitants are no strangers to harsh conditions; he also becomes an internationally debated scientific curiosity. Yet despite being poked and prodded by a host of specialists, all of whom insist that no one could have survived such an experience without a special gift, Gulli still appears to be an average guy with an indomitable will to survive.
