Book Club Meeting - How it all began

How it all began - by Penelope Lively

A vibrant new novel from Penelope Livelya wry, wise story about the surprising ways lives intersect

When Charlotte Rainsford, a retired schoolteacher, is accosted by a petty thief on a London street, the consequences ripple across the lives of acquaintances and strangers alike. A marriage unravels after an illicit love affair is revealed through an errant cell phone message; a posh yet financially strapped interior designer meets a business partner who might prove too good to be true; an old-guard historian tries to recapture his youthful vigor with an ill-conceived idea for a TV miniseries; and a middle-aged central European immigrant learns to speak English and reinvents his life with the assistance of some new friends.

Through a richly conceived and colorful cast of characters, Penelope Lively explores the powerful role of chance in people's lives and deftly illustrates how our paths can be altered irrevocably by someone we will never even meet. Brought to life in her hallmark graceful prose and full of keen insights into human nature, How It All Began is an engaging, contemporary tale that is sure to strike a chord with her legion of loyal fans as well as new readers. A writer of rare wisdom, elegance, and humor, Lively is a consummate storyteller whose gifts are on full display in this masterful work.

She creates good characters, good story line, not predictable at all. kay sandler | 25 reviewers made a similar statement I loved how an accident (mugging) becomes an example of the ripple effect--and how true it is, at least for these characters, that chance determines so much of life.

Really sorry for the library's mix up. I will speak to them about that. We were there, in our usual meeting room, 2nd floor.. not many of us (just 3 this week which was unusual)... but we all liked the book and would have loved your input. Due to low summer attendance, we agreed to reconvene in September. Hope to see you then.

I didn't find out what the book was for this month until three days ago, luckily it's a skinny book. I now know how to find out what the book will be a month ahead for future meetings so I'll have lots of time to read it.

    Hi!

I am interested to join this book club and meet new friends. I just wondering where to find next book club schedule and the book that will be used for next meeting.

    Thanks,
    Irna

Hi Irna... we meet the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Just click on "calendar" of the NSSC (upper left corner)... and check out the dates and the books we'll be covering. Hope to see you at one of our future meetings.

PS. Sometimes if there are 5 Wednesdays in the month, like July... we meet on the 4th Wednesday. Best to always check the calendar. Cheers./Melissa

I signed up for this Wednesday, but I have been rear ended again. I actually went to MEC today to put some reflective stickers for my bumper. Yup, three times since Sep. 30th is enough. I was looking forward to this book club meeting but I'll take a miss, sitting right now is not great. I'll sign up for the walks for now. Take care,
    Tess

If it is a nice evening, you may want to meet at the library then move outdoors to discuss the book in the summer sunshine. Enjoy

Dear Fellow Readers, as you may be aware I am moving from the North Shore in a few days. I need someone to act as the host the for the book club. I have booked the meeting room from now until October and all of the meetups are entered until October as well. I need someone that will email the library after each meeting and report how many people attended the book club for their records and the fact that they let us use the boardroom for free. Please let me know and I will pass on the email of the library person. Happy Reading. :)

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
