This weeks walk will be a walking tour of the 18 Tile Mosaics scattered about downtown Vancouver. We will walk through downtown, stopping for lunch or coffee and perhaps taking some photos along the way.
The Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association’s public art project beautifies downtown streets with 18 original tile mosaics, each measuring nine square feet and permanently installed in city sidewalks throughout the DVBIA’s 90-block area. The mosaics celebrate the diversity of Vancouver’s culture, sports, architecture, natural beauty and personalities.
Accomplished local mosaic artists Liz Calvin and Bruce Walther designed, produced and installed all the tiles.
Measuring nine square feet, each mosaic contains between 3,500 to 4,500 hand cut ceramic pieces in a kaleidoscope of colours. Each original work of art takes approximately 160 hours to create. The final grouting of the mosaics takes place when they are permanently installed. All 18 tiles are now installed in downtown sidewalks.
The complete tour will take 1½ - 2 hours depending on your pace – and how often you stop for coffee or to take in other sights along the way.
We will meet at the Lonsdale Quay seabus at 10:45 to catch the 11am and make our way over to vancouver to start the walk.
