Animal Place Sanctuary, Grass Valley

Let's head out to beautiful Grass Valley for a tour and vegan picnic at Animal Place Santuary!

Founded in 1989 Animal Place is one of the oldest and largest sanctuaries for farmed animals in the country. Nestled on 600-acres in Grass Valley, CA, Animal Place provides refuge to hundreds of neglected farmed animals.

Animals arrive from myriad sources – factory farms, slaughterhouses, research facilities, and neglect or cruelty cases. All animals find a haven where all their needs are met and their individual quirks respected.

Oak knolls, gently sloping hills, beautiful meadows and irrigated pastures make Animal Place’s sanctuary in the Sierra foothills a true safe haven. All the animals at Animal Place sanctuary are permanent residents, getting an opportunity to grow old.

Tours ($10 each) last two hours and entail a lot of walking on flat ground. The facility is wheelchair accessible, although there are some rocky portions of the property.

**And don't forget to bring a dish to share for the vegan potluck picnic after our tour!**

Visitor dogs are not permitted. This is for their safety and that of the animals. Please leave companion dogs at home.

We meet at the Church of the Incarnation (550 Mendocino Avenue) parking lot (on Cherry St) at 9:15 and leave at 9:30 sharp to arrive at Animal Place at 11:00.

Bring $10 for the tour, more money if you'd like to shop and support the on-premise store, comfy/warm clothes, and an easy-to-transport vegan dish to share.

Be on the lookout for updates and possible changes to this Meetup announcement!

Incredible time! Thank you so much to Wendy and Eileen for setting this up. Marji was an amazing tour guide. Animal Place has self-guided tours. Go visit! Thanks to all who attended!

Very informative. Was great to get to meet the animals. Sad to hear how their lives were before coming to Animal Place Sanctuary.

Hi all... I am bringing a canteloupe for my bovine friend Howie and his piglet friends. The non-human residents appreciate fruity treats! See you there! (I'm from the Chico Vegan Meetup and will be meeting you at Animal Place tomorrow.)

Thanks so much for Kamal--just a re-reminder that close-toed shoes are important at you will be around hooves:)

UV index will be 9, i.e. very high so wear/bring sunscreen. Bring water bottle for the tour and another for lunch. Bring your own plates and utensils as there won't be disposable ones. It's gonna be a fun day and I am really looking forward to it. Bring cameras!! See you all tomorrow.

    Dear All,

Please remember it is a long drive so let's all try our hardest to leave on time especially since we are meeting the Chico Vegan group there. Also remember to bring a dish for the picnic after the tour. Weather.com says high in Grass Valley will be 69 degF, winds at 10-20mph. It would be a good idea to bring a backpack with an extra, shirt or something light to wear on top of your regular clothe in case you get chilly.

    well...that's too bad!

OK folks I won't be able to attend either, but I will be there tomorrow a.m. to make sure that you all get the carpool thing done well and know where you are headed! If you are driving and don't have GPS, don't forget to print out directions to the Sanctuary before you go, and it will be key to get one of the CLO core members phone numbers who are attending in case you get lost on the way there.

Great Wendy! See all of you who are going to Vegan Life Support where we will talk about the trip a bit more:) Everyone else, see you at Incarnation or at the Sanctuary.

Hi All, I will not be attending after all. But have a fantastic time, and I hope to see you Friday night at VLS!

ALDF Wendy - will you be at the Vegan Life Support on Friday night? I want to talk to you about the trip as CLO will need your help that day.

It's tight leaving at 9:30 a.m., so the original meeting time of 9 a.m. at Incarnation's parking lot still stands. But folks shouldn't be any later than 9:15 a.m. because we hope to be on the road by then! Better to follow each other unless you have GPS in your car! If folks want to pick folks up on the way to Incarnation parking lot, feel free! Or if you fill your car before you even get to Incarnation and want to drive separately, go for it! Just give me the heads up!

Karen F, I drive right past there and can pick you up ..let me know.

Eileen - If we leave at 9:30 can we make it there in 2 hours and 15 minutes? I thought it was a longer trip than that

    May 1, 2012

  • Karen F

OK, I will be at the parking lot to hitch a ride.

    May 1, 2012

  • Eileen M. H.

Folks, the reason we picked the parking lot of Incarnation Church was to car pool with as many folks as possible! So if you are driving and/or you need a ride, the best thing to do is to go to Incarnation's parking lot by 9:15 a.m. You can safely leave your cars there! And you can pick up folks there for the trip and save gas money. If you drive separately, you need to let Wendy or myself know so we know who to expect there. We need everyone there by 11:45 a.m. at the latest.

Wondering if anyone would be willing to stop at the Rohnert Park Park and Ride and pick me up on the way? Thanks!

    May 1, 2012

  • Kamal S. P.

BTW, it takes about 2.5 hrs to get there and I drive on the cautious side so we should probably not leave Safeway later than 9:15am.

    May 1, 2012

  • Kamal S. P.

Of course, Hope. Can you meet me at the Safeway on the corner of Calitoga Rd and Hwy 12?

It looks like I'll be driving. I can fit two more people in my car comfortably (3 might be tight and it is a long ride, but if people wanna get cozy, that's cool also :)). Same meeting place unless you live towards Sonoma, in which case I can probably pick you on our way there.

I am going to this event and am willing to offer ride to those who may need it. Or I would love to get a ride if everyone has their getting to Animal Place rides taken care of.

Great Nicole!:) The cost is $10 for the AP tour payable to Marji at AP when we get there:)

I can also drive 3 people! I live in Moraga but will pick up my friend in oakland or berkeley! So if anyone around that area needs a ride, the more the merrier!

  • wendy

I am willing to drive - I can take 4 others and a couple of ice chests as well.

    April 5, 2012

  • Eileen M. H.

I would add that close toed shoes are important as hooves can step on feet accidentally when one is petting an animal:)
