Decembers Full Moon over San Francisco Painted Ladies

Learn moon photography during the “Golden Hours.” Shoot the moon over the "City" with San Francisco Chronicle retired staff photographer Frederic Larson. Discover some of the tricks of the trade photographing the full moon as it rises during the magic moments of twilight. See how to plot landmarks, read a compass, and choose an angle as the moon rises; measure exposures then scan images; and finally lay out your art for publication. Explore principles of light mastered by professional photographers of National Geographic magazine.

What you will be covering is moon photography. The range of focal length recommended is long to medium telephoto lenses. A tripod is suggested as the class will be doing long explorers in low light situations. The class will incorporate expose times, f/stop settings and certain photographic techniques that are beneficial in nighttime photography. Main areas of emphasis will be capturing peak moment.

Here is one of things that is so interesting about photography. We have a group of over 40 photographers, all standing within about 50 feet of each other. We all have somewhat comparable gear, and we are all looking at and shooting the same event. However when I see the photographs that everyone is putting online, it is such an amazing range of subject, look and feel, and style. Even shots of basically the same place in the same timeframe, even the smallest increment of time, and it's an entirely different picture. Is is just me or do folks find that amazing?

Also I would be remiss if I didn't give a call out to Frederic our fearless leader. His laid back style and generally good vibes seems to have brought together a really nice group of folks. I've enjoyed our outings and wish everyone a happy holiday season and NY to come.

My only disappointment is that I thought Fred was going to bring us all to Hawaii with him. Wasn't that part of the deal? OK maybe I misunderstood.

    Sorry I could not attend.
I agree with your comments Art. How different and interesting all of the photos are. And Fred...what a great job he does.

Agree, Art. I've found the same thing at workshops, and on trips with multiple photographers. That's what makes photography so fascinating. It isn't just a capture by a mechanical device, it is an individual photographer's vision and mind that make a photo.

Agree also that Frederic creates a great welcoming atmosphere at these meetups. I similarly understood that we all have an open invite to Hawaii… what's the date again?

Terrific, moonrise and sunset took place at the perfect sequence and interval. The moon stayed nice and low with a lot of light surrounding it.
