Weekly Paddle - LaDue Reservoir

  • This location is no longer available

  • Maybe you've paddled here before, but stayed on the main waterway. This time, we will be meandering around the lake, checking out its nooks and crannies. If there are enough participants, including newbies and the more experienced, we may break into two groups, se each can go at their own pace.

LaDue is 5.5 miles long, with a shore length of 24 miles. LaDue Reservoir is not located in a city, but in the townships of Auburn and Troy, Ohio, in Geauga County.

We will paddle for 2-3 hours and expect to return to shore while it is still daylight.

    EXPERIENCE LEVEL

So long as the lake is calm, paddlers at any skill levels will find this an easy paddle. On occasion, the wind whips up the water to the point of white caps, but we should know ahead of time if that is predicted and will post a message here as soon as we become aware of it.

    WHAT TO BRING

    • Kayak or canoe (Bring one or borrow one; there is no place to rent one at the site.)
    • Paddle(s)
    • PFD
    • Bilge pump
    • Paddle float
    • Non-alcoholic beverage; snack

We are hoping for a clear sky and good weather. But, if the weather is iffy, you may want to bring the following:

    Hat, rain jacket, dry clothing

    DIRECTIONS

If driving south on I-271, take US 422 east toward Warren.

Merge onto US-422 E. Travel about 15 miles.

Take the Rt. 44 exit SOUTH.

Take the last right turn, just before you cross the bridge, into the launch area and parking lot.

If driving north on I-271, head north on I-271 N toward Exits 27A-27B.

    Take exit 27A toward US-422 E/Warren.

Merge onto US-422 E. Travel about 15 miles.

Take the Rt. 44 exit SOUTH.

Take the last right turn, just before you cross the bridge, into the launch area and parking lot.

From any place else, find the intersection of US 422 (runs east/west) and Ohio Rt. 44 (runs north/south) on a map. At the intersection, go SOUTH on Rt. 44, as above.

A few of us turned up anyway, and enjoyed a great couple of hours paddling the backwaters of the reservoir. It was great to meet John, Karen and Torsten, and we look forward to meeting more of you at a future time. Marc & Liam

I've been watching the weather all day, hoping for a change in direction, but, alas, it's just too iffy for this evening.

"Mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms likely... Mainly this evening. Some thunderstorms May produce heavy rainfall this evening. Lows in the mid 60s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent." If it does rain, 1-2 inches are expected, along with flooding.

    https://www.lake-link.com/Ohio-Lake-Finder/lake.cfm/23574/LaDue-Reservoir-Geauga-County-Ohio-Weather/lake.cfm?LakeID=23574&View=Weather&config=&forecast=&place=burton&state=oh&zipcode=44021&country=us&hwvmaxhrs=12

When the winds pick up on LaDue, it can be treacherous (recall the Full Moon Paddle last year). Waves pick up at the same time. Since we are a mixed group when it comes to experience, I am canceling the paddle for this evening.

We'll be watching the weather for tomorrow evening. The whole week looks less than ideal, weather-wise, but as long as no thunderstorms, we will still paddle if it's raining. Please check this site Monday late afternoon, in case of updates. If you are signed up and want to give me your cell phone number, so I update you by text, send me a private email from this site. Click on my name, then click on the envelope icon. Thanks.
