Desert Night Sky Photography

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree/29 Palms: In the daytime, there is SO much to capture out here. Nighttime gives it all a whole new, magical feeling. After the holidays, I will set up a weekend for anyone wishing to come out and do some late afternoon/night shooting. Most likely it will be around a new moon or quarter moon when star trails are best captured. I'm leaning towards March/early April when the nights might be a bit warmer... As always, if anyone is making a trip out this way just because, give me a heads up and maybe we could hook up. At the very least, I could point you in some interesting directions.

I assume this would be an overnighter (camping) during a weekend? I've never shot night sky photos, so I'm looking forward to learning from the pros. :)

I've never done desert night sky photography -- but I can't wait to! I really want to go with some people who have done this before, so I can learn.

Here's a great egg to chicken tutorial on landscape astrophotography by Adam Woodworth. Well worth the read!

Well gee - I guess I posted this eons ago.... :-/ Should probably do something, huh? What looks good to people? Most likely a Saturday night. Nights have been mild so far. The winter skies are so incredibly clear. I'll post some date options for after the holidays and see what works best for most.

The Lyrid Meteor shower will be happening in April. Peak time is after midnight Apr 22. The moon will be dark, so it could be interesting. Here is a shot I took from Joshua Tree during the 2012 Lyrids https://www.flickr.com/photos/munnecket/6958602392/

I think this would be GREAT to do. Always wanted to do something like this but never knew how or where. Would be great to go for some instruction and a great group of people.
