Shooting the Homesteads in Wonder Valley

What better way to spend a mid week day off than wandering among bits of California history. It's been awhile since I hosted this meetup. We had great fun several years back - 2010. Wonder Valley has dozens of homesteads in various stages of decay - a rustic delight for photographers and history buffs alike. The late fall light is magical in the desert. We may even be treated to spectacular skies should any interesting weather come through around this time. Plan to meet at the JTNP Visitor Center in the village of Joshua Tree. There are places to eat and refuel after your drive from San Diego out to the desert. We can caravan or carpool out to The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery - yet another quirky spot to hang out and photograph rustic desert living. Laurel, the gallery owner, has an interesting story to tell about her dream. I am surprised every time I head out there at the newest sculptures and renovations taking place. From there, we can squish into cars and tule around a route I've picked out with some classic homesteads of the area - all within a 5 square mile radius of The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery. We will have the luminous late afternoon golden desert light to show us the way. Some folks stayed later, last time, and did some light painting of the rustic cabins. No danger of snakes at this time of year, so wander to your hearts and lenses delight!

Depending upon the number of people, we can end our time with pizza and beverages at my place in Yucca Valley before you head back to San Diego - which is exactly 2 1/2 hrs from my abode to San D proper. (2 of my kids live in San D so I have the drive wired!)

Hi All, Looks like we've got about 2 dozen folks from both San D photo groups attending. As we get closer to the date, I will email you specifics and tips to make your day trip fun and productive. The desert fall weather is glorious right now and our mojave light promises to bring on the magic late that afternoon. We will stage ourselves at the Glass Outhouse Art Gallery (after initially meeting up at the JTNP visitor center in Joshua Tree) which is a photographic treat in itself. For those who came out last time, you should see what Laurel has done over the years! Pretty fun. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

This was a lot of fun the last time we did this, and I would love to do this again, but can't do it on a week day. I look forward to seeing the photos.
