Break in the weather climbing at the Spires

Phantom Spires (map)

Selected By: Andrew

Want to do some cold weather, break in the snow, craggin' before Christmas? Yeah me too. Top Rope and Lead climbs are available. The road into the Spires requires some extra vehicle clearance, so some car pooling with well equipped vehicles is a must. Suggested meetup location: El Dorado Hills at 8:30am. Exit Latrobe Rd. "Park and Ride", south of 50, east side of Latrobe Rd at Whiterock Rd.

You need a harness and shoes.

I would love to make it. I think my wife has plans for me though :( I might be able to do it during the week.

To everyone else... if your schedule is open, I would attend this event with Andrew! The Spires are awesome for beginners and advanced climbers.

Well tell Robyn if I commit, it's our last chance to climb for a while (unless we go to a gym). Let her know she's doing it for me, she'll understand. Plus she owes me one trip for the last time:)

I can't do weekends for a while but I did manage to get her approval to camp at the Spires this Thursday night and climb Friday. Probably too late to create an event. Will try and bring a couple guys from work. 40% chance of snow on Thursday so it should be fun. Friday and Saturday look nice though :)

Tony, sorry to see you change your mind. I know it is a long day and 8 hours in the car for you when you live in Chico. Maybe a two day trip next year?

OK, Ingrid and Anil. Thanks for jumping on board! We will see if anyone else posts today and tomorrow. Do either of you have a high clearance vehicle? Do you guys have any desire to start out a little earlier like maybe meet at 7:30am instead of 8:30? Let me know what you are expecting and or looking for out of this outing. Since we may have a small group we can be a little more accommodating to individual needs.

Sorry Andrew, definitely got excited there, however, was not thinking about car time vs. climb time...would love to spend an entire day up there when the weather warms up!!

    Hi Andrew

I have not done rock climbing outside and have only been to indoor climbing 2xx.. I suck in knot tying, forgot sometimes how to belay and above all dont understand what you are talking about. As for high clearance vehicle...how bad is the trailhead ? I did not notice the time to start is 10PM, is that correct ? If its 10PM, you mean overnight camping ?

Ingrid, wow you are the fist one to notice my typo. 10am is what it says now, sorry. I was thinking of meeking in El Dorado Hills at 8:30am. It is about 90 minutes drive to the Spires from there. That would make 10am. The road to the trail head is rough dirt, that is the reason for the high vehicle clearance. The trail is nothing more than you would find in Desolation and it's short, 10 minutes max. It is possible to park on the main road and walk the dirt road, but that adds 30 minutes

Ingrid, In regards to your experience. Do you have shoes and a harness? If so, that's enough for me. There are some good climbs that would be similar to a gym in that they would have the same rope setup.

Ingrid, Even if you are not comfortable climbing, that's OK. You are welcome to watch and learn.

The roads and trails were good when we left today. Some ice spots but nothing to worry about. 4x4 is a must to get through the trail due to one uphill area with ice near the top. All climbing areas are clear of snow and the rock is dry. Today was too windy to enjoy the climbs but we still had fun. Tomorrow should be better. Wish I could come! Have fun everyone!

Great day with very good weather for a December day. Wind was comfortable in the sun and tolerable in the shade. Everyone did very well, some were climbing outside for the first time. It was nice to meet everyone. I had a great time climbing, helping, and getting to know some cool people. Hope to see you all on the next meetup!

Thanks for hosting Andrew and introducing us beginners to the rock climbing world :)

Andrew was a great host! Everyone friendly and fun. What a great spot. Weather was just fine. Like you might expect, it makes a big difference whether you are in the sun or the shade, in the wind or sheltered. All circumstances were doable regardless.
  • Bill
Awesome day out there! Special thanks to Andrew for a great attitude and for sharing your knowledge and experience with us beginners!
