January Non-fiction: Five Days at Memorial

UPDATED DATE: Science Club contacted us with a scheduling conflict. This meetup has been updated to reflect that change and will now be meeting on WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22ND at SEVEN P.M. Apologies for any inconvenience, but still hoping to see those of you who have RSVP'd there!

-----------------------

January's non-fiction read is Sheri Fink's "FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital". This book made the 2013 list and was named in their top ten, as well.

Brief description below, followed by a link to the NYT review. You can check-out from the DC public library, purchase at a local bookstore, or find online. Hope to see you all January 21! Feel free to send me a message if you have other location recommendations!

--------

In harrowing detail, Fink describes the hellish days at a hospital during and after Hurricane Katrina, when desperate medical professionals were suspected of administering lethal injections to critically ill patients. Masterfully and compassionately reported and as gripping as a thriller, the book poses reverberating questions about end-of-life care, race discrimination in medicine and how individuals and institutions break down during disasters.

Reminder. If you missed the official Meetup drop by Guapos (4515 Wisconsin NW. DC) at noon today, Saturday, in Tenleytown. On the same block as the Tenleytown metro stop. Parking behind the Whole Foods (or in garage if you stop in and buy something-validate). Melanie and I will be there.

Sorry I missed my first meeting with the group. I'm a cold-weather wimp, also trekking in from Fairfax. I hope Mother Nature is on my side in February. . . . I enjoyed the gripping first half of the book (the storm narrative) but was bored/frustrated by the second half (the lawsuit narrative). Would have loved to hear everyone else's thoughts about the issues presented.

We were a small group - but had a lively discussion. It looks like there may be a contingent getting together this weekend (see comment thread below). Perhaps you could meet them? If not, looking forward to seeing you in warmer weather :)

Yeah, Libby and I will be there for sure!

So sorry to have missed tonight! Got tied up at work.

Maybe anyone who is missing tonight might want to meet me for lunch this Saturday to talk about the book? Say Guapos on Wisconsin at noon in Tenleytown? Email me a yes at [masked] or I may not be there. While it is suppose to snow it will also be 40° :)

Hi all. We're up on the 3rd floor - don't get lost :)

Count me in on a "part II." I work in Reston and live in Fairfax and won't brave the Metro or 66 tonight. Really enjoy the book.

    Can we reschedule?
I'd really like to attend today's book club. However, after seeing so many cars on the shoulder lane, along 66, it might be best for me to stay in Fairfax.

Hi Catianne - I completely understand your predicament. We're going to go ahead with the meetup - perhaps we can hold a 'part II' depending on turnout. Thanks much, and stay safe!

Alright folks - I've heard from three that can't make it - not a majority. Please let me know here or via the cell number I provided earlier if you'd like a reschedule so I can get in touch with Science Club ASAP.

Sorry for the bursts of communication. For those of you planning on attending - I will be there waiting at 7:00. Depending on turnout, I'll reschedule. Thanks, everyone!

Will you possibly be rescheduling tonight? Once you factor in the wind chill it is going to feel like approximately 8°--10° at 7:00 pm. Just need to know if the meetup is still on for tonight. (PS. I love Science Club!)

Hi Libby! I'm still planning on being there, but I just sent a message to the group looking for input. If anything changes, I'll let you know.

Loved the book, but will have to stay late at work! Alas.

    January 21, 2014

    • Monica S.

Bummer! Glad you liked the book - hope you can join us next time!

I hate to miss the discussion on this book but I'm in Reston and won't brave the frigid temps to take Metro downtown tomorrow night. The book is a good read and I've just returned from New Orleans where signs of Katrina's destruction are still visible. We might want to consider reading Dave Eggers" Zeitoun as a fiction follow up. See you next time.

Thanks for the note - glad you enjoyed the read. I got really caught up in it and hope to see you next time!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
