April Nonfiction Meetup: "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, & the Prison ..."

Please join us for the April nonfiction pick,Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief.

From The New York Times: "That crunching sound you hear is Lawrence Wright bending over backward to be fair to Scientology. Every deceptive comparison with Mormonism and other religions is given a respectful hearing. Every ludicrous bit of church dogma is served up deadpan. This makes the book’s indictment that much more powerful. Open almost any page at random. That tape of L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology’s founder, that Wright quotes from? “It was a part of a lecture Hubbard gave in 1963, in which he talked about the between-lives period, when thetans are transported to Venus to have their memories erased.”

I'm unable to get out of my meeting early enough to get there. Didn't realize until today it's 6:30 p.m. It may just be from reading this book and the incipient paranoia, but I'd suggest whoever runs the meeting asks if anyone attending is from Scientology headqtrs. We wouldn't want any of our pets harmed. Wow! So glad I read it!

The MLK library is a great idea. Very central.

Laura, Are you wedded to DC for the group? There's a really good facility - separate room in Curious Grape - but it's in Shirlington section of Arlington. I'd prefer 4/14 to 4/7 due to prior commitment.

I can't get the Science Club that night, so I am trying to reserve a room at the MLK Library. Sorry for the inconvenience! I will update the location as soon as I hear back. The other option would be to hold the discussion Monday 4/7 or Monday 4/14, so those of you who are planning to attend, please let me know if you like one of those more than the new location. Thanks!

This was a very interesting book. I'm sorry I can't be there. I'm at another book event.

I agree with Lisa Ann! Lawrence Wright also wrote a great piece on Scientology for the New Yorker a couple years ago: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/02/14/110214fa_fact_wright?currentPage=all

I believe Going Clear was based on this original piece. Both good reads.

I really enjoyed the movie THE MASTER w/ PS Hoffman, app'ly loosely based on Hubbard. Plus, all the Hollywood Scientology groupies. Looking forward to learning more.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
