The last book I read (and the best thing I've read recently) was Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. Haven't seen the movie yet, but the novel's characters are brilliantly drawn, and I found it very powerful.
A month ago, I would have said Kazuo Ishiguro or Edward Jones, but Richard Yates is now a contender too.
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, The Beach at Galle Road by Joanna Luloff, and Tripmaster Monkey by Maxine Hong Kingston.
Any kind of fiction.
