Sir Mark Elder conductor
Simon Trpceski piano
Elgar Cockaigne Listen
Grieg Piano Concerto Listen
Dvořák Scherzo Capriccioso
Janáček Sinfonietta Listen
This gala evening celebrates the achievements of the Hallé as our resident orchestra over the past ten years, beginning with Elgar's overture, Cockaigne described by the composer as 'cheerful and Londony, "stout and steaky"'. Then we're off to Norway, with Grieg's passionate Piano Concerto performed by the phenomenal Macedonian pianist Simon Trpceski.
Dvořák's jovial Scherzo Capriccioso was written whilst the composer was enjoying the first fruits of success before his compatriot, Janáček, provides the festive finale. His Sinfonietta is much loved as a vibrant orchestral spectacular, its ripe Slavic sound amplified by a muscular line up of twelve trumpets.
