The UX Army of One: How to Get More Done with Less

Some companies have legions of designers, developers and user experts at their disposal. Sometimes, it’s just you. This presentation is about how to get usability and user experience off the ground at your office. We’ll discuss the challenges of being a one-man band, and some simple strategies of getting more for less effort: cheap tools, effective techniques and evangelizing strategies.

Presented by Jonathan Rubin, Program Manager for the DigitalGov User Experience Program at the U.S. General Services Administration. While Jonathan's background is government, the hard-knock lessons are universal.

Hi everyone. Someone had mentioned use of free marketing materials that companies use to entice you to use their product. Hubspot is a great resource that delivers emails on about a semi-weekly basis with tons of information. All they ask is that you provide your email. Their book, Inbound Marketing, is a quick and informative read as well (which is how I heard of them). It discusses how to establish dialogues with your customers and not just speak to them. There website is http://www.hubspot.com/ for more information.

Thanks to Kit and Jim for organizing and to Jonathan Rubin for a very practical and concise presentation.

Axure was one of the prototyping tools mentioned. It is powerful but has a significant learning curve. Here is a presentation I did for Axure World to help get you started with the basics
http://www.slideshare.net/sfchovanec/smart-axure if you have any questions let me know. The research book I mentioned was "Just Enough Research" by Erika Hall from A Book Apart. http://www.abookapart.com/products/just-enough-research

A more in-depth companion to Steve Krug's books.

It was casual yet professional. I enjoyed getting a better understanding of the tips and lessons learned behind much needed UX support.

Thanks, Jim. We'll write you back in turn if we attendees with kids learn that schools will be closing early on us, ie kids out unexpectedly.

Hey Jim. Has there been any further thought on live streaming/recording these meetings?

    February 11, 2014

    • Jim L.

Yep, we've been (at least trying to be) streaming these for a while. Last month we had some technical difficulties – Google keeps changing the feature >_< – however we'll be streaming tomorrow night. I'll be posting the URL closer to the event and will post to the usual social media channels as well.
