Double Feature: Getting a Job in UX, and Google's Material Design

For our October meetup we'll be doing a double-feature!

First, Chrissy Ching from HireStrategy will be sharing strategies for finding and landing a job in UX, including how to work with a recruiter.

Then, Roman Nurik will be joining us via Google Hangout to talk about Material Design, share insights about design process at Google, and take questions.

About our speakers

Chrissy Ching... coming soon!

Roman Nurik is a Design Advocate at Google, focusing on user experience and visual design for Android. Previously, Roman was a developer advocate on Android and Maps. Before Google, he engaged in web design and development work on a variety of independent projects.

Poor man's version of the screen cast @ http://goo.gl/2TVLua.

There is an issue with the sound around 12m to 13m30s and 17m30s to 18m into the video. Other than that, the rest should be fine.

PS. No, you won't see the glamour shot of the recruiter ;p You have to contact her directly and please about job only!

We want to use videos on our site. Has anyone heard that it is a bad thing to use Flash?

    October 17

    • Jen M.

I would suggest HTML 5 video. You might need to use some video player that can fall back to Flash if the browser does not support HTML 5 video tag (you know what browser:)).

Thanks for the great event! For anyone who wasn't able to attend, I wrote a blog recap of some of the key takeaways from the Material Design presentation. There's also a recap of the Action Design Behavioral Economics conference for anyone who wasn't able to attend that. jeannakim.wordpress.com

Jim, thank you for always organizing such amazing and awesome events for NoVA UX. I have learnt SO MUCH just by attending the monthly meetups. I can't wait to learn more and get better with UX.

Us too - the hangout is running now if you want to jump in and I'll see if I can see you.

This is my first event/Not familiar with venue. Where do we park? Does the building this is in have a name visible from the road after dark?

    Thanks!

    October 15

    • Jim L.

There's lots of parking in front and in back. If you come in the main entrance we're in the West Concourse on the right, 3rd floor. There's a building directory in the Lobby, and there will be someone downstairs to point folks to the elevator.

    • Chris R.

      thanks!

With Roman Nurik's Google Hang Out be recorded and posted online afterwards?

    September 29

    • Jim L.

Probably - our track record Google Hangouts and YouTube isn't awesome but I'll do my best.

    • Jim L.

Hi Lisa - I checked with the IT team here, we're going to use Google's basic hangout and not hangouts on air, so unfortunately this won't be recorded. Apologies!

      1 · October 14

  • David F.

Is it possible to join the Google Hangout if I can't make the event?

    October 12

    • Jim L.

No, sorry, I'm just using the hangout so Roman can connect - Hangouts are limited to a set number of attendees so I can't open it up to the group in case Roman's running late!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
