WHAT to the Picnic ??

Please Note : This event is a one time shot as I've had to pay a decent amount of money for the location in advance so it is a Rain or Shine event.  If it is just a miserable rainy day (and I mean totally yucky like a hurricane) the event will be cancelled and not rescheduled so let's hope for nice weather.

The Picnic:

For your riding and picnicking pleasure, please join us for our Fourth Annual NOVA-CBG Summer Picnic and Bicycle Ride !!!  This is our way of saying "Thank You" for being an active member of our Casual Bicycling Group and a way for those that haven't ridden with us yet to come out and meet us.  It will be a great day of socializing and bicycle rides.  This meetup is open to all our members and their families !!

NOVA-CBG has reserved a spot in Fort Hunt Park just for us (picnic spot reservations allow up to 120 people to attend).  We have Picnic Area D which has a solid pavilion, baseball diamond, and Port-O-Johns (but we are walking distance to flush toilets).

NEW THIS YEAR - Stephanie and Heather will be bringing bike specific jewelry for your viewing and buying pleasure.  All monies will go to THE SMART RIDE that we are doing in November.

____________________
NoVA-CBG will provide the following for the picnic:

• Reservation of the Picnic Area (Done)

• Hamburgers

• Hot Dogs

• Hamburger Rolls

• Hot Dog Rolls

• Water / Gatorade / ICE

• Corn on the Cob

• Note: If you're a vegetarian and you can let me know what would be a good grilling substitute I don't mind picking it up.
____________________

Things you should bring for yourself:

•  A Dish to Pass

• Chairs

• Bug Spray / Sunscreen / Whatever else you need for the great outdoors.

• Camera

• Bike Lock

• Any personal items (Veggie Burgers / Specific Beverages / Whatever you need or want).

____________________

A few notes:

• Beer and Wine is ALLOWED at Fort Hunt Park ... so please BYOBB (bring your own Beer and Bicycle).  Use your judgement when drinking and biking... enough said on that.

• When you RSVP a question will "pop up" asking what you are bringing to the picnic.  PLEASE answer that question and if possible put the same thing in your "comment" when you RSVP.

I'll be keeping track of who's bringing what to just make sure we have it all covered.  If you want to see who's bringing what or things I need  ...

• Any personal items (Veggie Burgers / Specific Beverages / Whatever you need or want).

Let's talk money for a second:

There are three reasons we mention why it's really nice when you pay the suggested annual membership fee of $10.

• To help pay for MEETUP.COM fees.

• To help fund the NOVA-CBG Holiday Party on December 6th 2014.

• To help fund the NOVA-CBG Summer Picnic (This Meetup).

If you've paid your membership fee already, accept this as my hearty "Thank You".  If you haven't paid it yet please bring it with you when you come to the picnic.  As I always say, we don't want the paying of the $10 suggested membership fee to stop anyone from coming to the picnic; however, the opposite is also true as we never turn away additional donations so I'll let you and your pocketbook make that decision.

The Ride:

Bicycle rides : Carl and Sharon Frank will be handing the rides again this year.  There will be one ride in the morning, a beginner-level ramble of about 10 miles showcasing the scenic lower Mount Vernon Trail, with stops at the Collingwood Mansion and Riverside Park. Pre-ride speech at 10:30 am SHARP.

Last year the afternoon ride was lightly attended... so we are going to play it by ear this year whether we do one or not.  Carl has a ride in mind, but we will see if folks want to do it.

Ride Level Chart:

A note about our ride levels. We try to accommodate all levels of cyclists with different types of rides. We just ask that you come to the ride that suits your current riding ability the best.

Introductory Level : If you haven't ridden a bike in a number of years (or are uncertain of your abilities on a bicycle).

Beginner Level : If you can easily ride your bike for 10 miles (distance) with some minor hills at a comfortable pace (10+ to 12+ mph).

Medium Level : If you can do 20 miles pretty easily at a moderate pace (13 to 15+ mph)

Advanced Level : If you can do 20++ miles easily at a 15+ pace and / or handle various challenges as rain, night riding, or other odd cycling situations.

The Fine Print:

An RSVP of 'YES' is your digital signature and means you have read and understood MEETUP.com's "Terms of Service : Section 6.2 " found HERE (http://www.meetup.com/terms/) and NOVA-CBG's "Assumption of Risk Agreement" found HERE (http://files.meetup.com/1557670/NOVA-CBG_WAIVER.pdf).

Remember that helmets are required to participate in all NOVA-CBG rides. NO Helmet, NO ride, NO exceptions. All riders ride at their own risk and with the understanding that cycling is an inherently dangerous activity. When coming to the meetup you do so voluntarily and are ready and able to participate in the ride as described under the conditions of the day.

Be on time for the "pre-ride" preparation. This is when we check to make sure you have all the required equipment and the last chance for you to make sure your bike is ready for the ride. We will also talk through the route for the day and review basic safety instruction for group riding as well as other important topics. If you do not attend the pre-ride preparation, you will not be allowed to participate on the ride, so please be on time as there will be NO exceptions. Please also keep in mind the group's cancellation policy when you RSVP.

I had a wonderful time meeting all the welcoming members from NOVA-CBG! I've only been able to make it to one ride since joining in April due to personal issues in my life but am looking forward to getting to know all of you better as I get "back in the saddle again" on my bike. Thank you to Gary and each and every person who made this event such a success. Not an easy feat to pull off such a large event so KUDOS goes out to all of you.

Thanks to Mastermind Gary for getting everyone involved . What a great camp counselor you would be. You would teach cycling of course. So much fun. Also thanks to George, Louis and others who were the grill sergeants. And to Jim as photographer who seemed to include all 100 plus people in photos. Enjoyed seeing my VA friends once again and this time getting to have lots of chat time.

  • Gary W.

    Greetings NoVA CBG,

As you can imagine, I have so many people to thank for helping me pull this off year after year. That's what I try to say when I do my "speech" at lunch. But let me just say this instead, this group wouldn't exist without the volunteer time and enthusiasm of my organizers. This group wouldn't exist without the courage of new riders showing up for a bike ride hoping the group is as nice as they think it is. This group would not exist without everyone doing their part to make each event / bike ride / outing just that much more special. So to steal the sentiment from Carl... I want to thank everyone for being who they are and for contributing whatever it is that you can contribute whether it be stuff, or your time, or maybe just a smile when you see me in "implementation" mode. :) Everything you do, large or small, is appreciated not just by me, but the group as a whole. I am honored to have and be a part of such a great bicycling family. ~ Gary

Thanks for all the effort, organization, and patience with all the little things that can and do happen at these events. Carl and Sharon, thank you for everything you did too, esp the bike ride. And to all the other helpers and organizers, kudos!!

Throwing such a successful event for 100+ people takes a true team effort, from captain Gary to the organizers to every single person who attended and contributed food and fun to the cause. You all deserve to take a bow. You all deserve our sincere thanks. It truly was another awesome picnic... and another reminder that -- on or off the bike -- NOVA-CBG rocks! :)

It was great except I didn't got to ride with the group

    August 2, 2014

    • Carl

Ann, you didn't get to ride with the group because you didn't follow one our core safety requirements. Here's a direct quote from the meetup description: "If you do not attend the pre-ride preparation, you will not be allowed to participate on the ride, so please be on time as there will be NO exceptions." Enough said.

He's a 60's/70s folkie kinda guy... like many of us! http://www.reverbnation.com/philselz
