CANCELLED : Advanced Level : Night Ride ~ The Capital Wheel

Advanced Level : Night Ride
The Capital Wheel

This ride is by Organizer selection.  What does that mean?  It is an Advanced Ride since it is at night and an important consideration is that I need to know beforehand how you ride with the group.  So if you haven't ridden with us a number of times you won't be selected to do this ride.

Just add yourself to the waiting list for consideration.

The Ride:

Arrive at 7:00pm
Rolling no later than 7:30pm

Sunset is at 8:38pm.
It is a Full Moon also.

http://nationalharbor.com/things-to-do-in-dc/attractions/the-capital-wheel/

Time to get a night ride under our belts with a nice new night recon ride.

Let's ride our bikes to the latest and greatest attraction found right at the National Harbor... The Capital Wheel.  It is open until 10pm so we can catch a ride once the sun goes down.  We will leave from Shirlington and take my "Halloween" route down into Old Town Alexandria and across the Wilson Bridge to National Harbor.  To ride the National Wheel will be $15 per person.

NOTE: The National Wheel isn't open yet but is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend.

You must have a headlight that is at least 150 lumen.  You must also have at least one red tail light (more would be helpful, like an additional one on the back of your helmet).  No 150 lumen headlight, no ride, no exceptions.  Any other lights on your bike are a welcome addition.

Ride Level Chart:

A note about our ride levels. We try to accommodate all levels of cyclists with different types of rides. We just ask that you come to the ride that suits your current riding ability the best.

Introductory Level : If you haven't ridden a bike in a number of years (or are uncertain of your abilities on a bicycle).

Beginner Level : If you can easily ride your bike for 10 miles (distance) with some minor hills at a comfortable pace (10+ to 12+ mph).

Medium Level : If you can do 20 miles pretty easily at a moderate pace (13 to 15+ mph)

Advanced Level : If you can do 20++ miles easily at a 15+ pace and / or handle various challenges as rain, night riding, or other odd cycling situations.

The Fine Print:

An RSVP of 'YES' is your digital signature and means you have read and understood MEETUP.com's "Terms of Service : Section 6.2 " found HERE (http://www.meetup.com/terms/) and NOVA-CBG's "Assumption of Risk Agreement" found HERE (http://files.meetup.com/1557670/NOVA-CBG_WAIVER.pdf).

Remember that helmets are required to participate in all NOVA-CBG rides. NO Helmet, NO ride, NO exceptions. All riders ride at their own risk and with the understanding that cycling is an inherently dangerous activity. When coming to the meetup you do so voluntarily and are ready and able to participate in the ride as described under the conditions of the day.

Be on time for the "pre-ride" preparation. This is when we check to make sure you have all the required equipment and the last chance for you to make sure your bike is ready for the ride. We will also talk through the route for the day and review basic safety instruction for group riding as well as other important topics. If you do not attend the pre-ride preparation, you will not be allowed to participate on the ride, so please be on time as there will be NO exceptions. Please also keep in mind the group's cancellation policy when you RSVP.

This was the right call. Lightening and rain have been consistently predicted for 8. That wave is delayed now a cpla hours but lightening is still in the area. Not sure they want the Ferris wheel running.

SUnny hot and humid in rville.

HA HA Now the rain god appears here too.

      June 13, 2014

  • Gary W.

Of course you know it isn't going to rain now... right?

    2 · June 13, 2014

    • Janine

Well, can't predict the future. There's still a chance it could rain. I would be happier if it did. Won't be able to join you tonight. I took advantage of the time to get my wheels back, auto wheels. Tomorrow I get my other wheels back. Have fun!

The weather gods like to toy with us.

I'm sorry the weather didn't cooperate, but am selfishly hopeful that I can go when you reschedule! I'm a sucker for Ferris Wheels. :-) And if you're looking for something fun to do tonight, consider BikeFest. Tix are available at the door.

Al and I are going to O'Connells in Old Town for food and drink at 7pm. If you want to come, show up.. if not, we will still be there ... trying to steal a peek at the full moon and shaking our fists at Friday the 13th.

3 things in the decision making process.
    1) If a storm does come in the Capital Wheel will close.
    2) It's a night ride, challenging in its own right ... and I don't want to add rain to the mix.
    3) This is easily rescheduled and I will do so very shortly.
And last but not least, thanks to all that pulled up the weather and helped me out. I got your emails and texts... which is why I'm making this early decision. I can't seem to win for losing now a days.

Gary, again thank you for putting this together. Looking forward to the rescheduled. If Gary says we roll, I'll roll. There is nothing on my bike that can not get wet, except my bald head.

Thanks Gary. Appreciate you keeping us posted and consideration for those who have a distance and traffic to tend with. Until next time :).

  • Gary W.

So let's all play a game... Everyone go to your own personal "weather source" ... you know, the one that you always go to for your OWN purposes... and post what it says it will be doing from 7pm to 10pm this evening.

    June 13, 2014

    • Sam

      0% precipitation 7-10 pm... 70% at 10 pm.

      June 13, 2014

    • Gary W.

Thanks everyone... at 3pm I'm seeing what Sam just posted... but that's still enough to make the evening NOT enjoyable if it hits while we are on our bikes.

      June 13, 2014

  • Gary W.

I'm cancelling the ride for this evening. I'm not happy about it, but see my post below. Thanks Gary

    Hello all,
As of now, it is looking like it will start raining around 3pm and continue into the evening with thunderstorms backing off to just rain around 10pm. The Capital Wheel will close due to inclement weather if it is bad so we have that to consider also. I will watch the weather but I'm letting you know ahead of time that if the forecast is accurate the ride will be cancelled. I'll be in touch and check back on meetup before heading to the ride.

    2 · June 13, 2014

    • Steve

If it does cancel, maybe we could meet for a happy hour in Shirlington ?!?

      June 13, 2014

    • Tracy

I had the same thought even though it would mean driving through rush hour from MD.

      June 13, 2014

  • Gary W.

The weather for now appears to not be cooperating... Keep an eye on this folks.

Just an update for those wanting to do this ride. Remember, you MUST have a headlight that is at least 150 lumen. You must also have at least one red tail light (more would be helpful, like an additional one on the back of your helmet). No 150 lumen headlight, no ride, no exceptions. Any other lights on your bike are a welcome addition. Recheck your calendar to make sure you are available on Friday night, and of course we will need to keep an eye on the weather.

What is the milage for this route? Didnt see that on the info

    May 26, 2014

Only asked bc hoofing the style of bike I have in St. Michaels was tough. Unable to get a road bike in the near future.

      May 26, 2014

    • Carl

Not sure what your St. Michaels issues were, but Shirlington to National Harbor is less than 10 miles. And there will be a big break in between. That's doable with any type of bike.
