New Humanists are people new to Humanism, seeking to renew Humanism, having new perspectives on Humanism, or making new friendships in a Humanist community.
Please note there is no entry charge for our Meetups. However donations may be canvassed when food or drink is served.
Humanists forgo the temptations of religious delusion, but still seek firm grounding in an awesome world, sharing in a caring community, personal growth, understanding, and imaginative engagement.
Humanism is a flexible, open-minded life philosophy - exploring our common humanity, and shared reality - grounded in natural human values like compassion and fairness. There is no dogma, but the broad sweep of Humanism can be seen in the best aspects of the modern Enlightenment - secularism, science, social democracy, human rights - but with a post-modern skepticism, pursuing happiness in sustainable and imaginative ways.
A Meetup devoted to Humanism is a chance to build a community of like-minded people enhancing their human capacities, fine-tuning their ethical sensitivities, enriching their sustainable lifestyles, becoming citizens of humanity and find nourishing companionship. This will be most rewarding for those who come often. Good people take a good time to get to know, and a humanist understanding grows when we view and cultivate our humanity from a range of key perspectives. Of course those who wish to just try a taste from time to time are also welcome.
On the fourth Sunday of each month is New Humanists Sunday Open House. This is at 3.00p.m. in Humanist House, Chippendale - an open, safe, friendly space facilitating comfortable discussion and enjoyable education. Activities include campaigning, partying, philosophising, views and visions, spirited discussions, thoughtful speakers, informal chat, humour and fun, insights and growth, sharing and learning, in a community of individuals.
Topics are broad enough to allow participation at all levels of interest, but deep enough to enhance humanist understanding for those engaging wholistically.
There are also social evenings at congenial pubs, usually shared with Sydney Atheists Meetup - an opportunity to enjoy food, drink and conversation with fellow non-believers.
Once members are comfortable at Humanist House they may wish to consider joining our sponsors, the Humanist Society of NSW. Meetup members are welcome to attend occasions such as the HuVAT talks at 4.00p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. These will have topics of interest, but be aware these events are not customised for newcomers in the same way as the Open House events. The Society is now over 50 years old with a treasured heritage.
We're building a community, so please don't be shy in offering thoughts and suggestions.
