NEW TOPICS: Weekly singing classes at Jalopy, March/April

  • Mar 11, 2014 · 7:00 PM

Dear Singers,

I'm writing to let you know about two NEW classes I'll be teaching at Jalopy this "spring" (hoping that March/April are actually spring-like in some manner. . .) Once in a blue moon, it feels good to try something different! I think these topics will appeal to some of you, and I'm excited to teach them. The first is a "Playing and Singing at the Same Time" class, which I think will be really fun and have real practical value, and the second is "Vocal Harmonies from Around the World," which I have taught at summer festivals and is always a blast, and very good for stretching both your sense of harmony and your voice itself. Please let me know if you have any questions - it would be great to see you there! Here are descriptions and links for registration:

TUESDAY MARCH 11, 18, 25, APRIL 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

This class will offer the basic skills for someone who wants to put their voice together with an instrument for the first, or nearly the first time. If you can play 5-10 chords on a uke or guitar, and would like to accompany yourself while singing, this class will help you do just that! This class will help you play in time while you sing a melody, help you gain confidence with the fingerings and rhythm patterns through guided repetition, and give you the basic tools to pick up a chord and lyric sheet and be your own one-person band. Each weekly class will involve playing a new song or two, making music with others in the class, and honing the specific skills needed to get your fingers and voice working together so you can self-accompany and attend old time, bluegrass, and other singing jams. This class is ideal for ukulele and guitar players. Please email [masked] with any questions.

This class is a sampling of what some of the world's best harmony traditions have to offer. Drawing from diverse traditions such as Balkan, Sephardic, South African, and American Sacred Harp, we'll take a tour around the world and dig into some of the gems from these and other cultures. No knowledge of musical notation OR other languages is required! Each week, we'll tackle another piece or two, with songs ranging from heart-wrenching to foot-stomping. This class is ideal for anyone who is curious about world singing traditions, wants to expand his/her musical ear by experiencing different musical scales and modes, or wants to explore his/her voice by trying out different techniques and styles. If your voice feels stuck in a rut, this might be the creative boost you need! Please email [masked] with any specific questions.
