ABOUT THIS MEETUP:
During this meetup we are going to take GRE practice test to figure out knowledge *gaps*. Based on that we will try to form groups/pairs to work on particular sections of the exam.
As taking test is a long process we may decide to do selected parts only (it's up to everyone which to choose). We'll figure that out early during the meeting :) Anyhow, be prepared to spend more than 2 hours.
GENERAL MESSAGE for group:
As we discussed during the first meetup:
1. We will be meeting on a weekly basis for at least 13 weeks from now on. Hopes are to keep this meetup alive for a long time (though organizers may change, etc. after current members take their exams).
2. Apart from weekly meetings which are likely to happen during week-end somewhere in mid/downtown of Manhattan, members are welcome to suggest meetups throughout the week in different locations. These may be more casual ones. Of course, members are also welcome to get in touch with each other to meet/study in pairs without creating formal meetup. I.e. this meet-up should act as a base for *connecting* people for studying GRE.
SUGGESTIONS:
S1. Since everybody has different week schedule and different planned activities for a week the suggested weekly meetup time/place might work bad for someone. Given the context and the purpose of this meetup group (meet/discuss/study) it looks OK to have "parallel track" of weekly meetings. I.e. "parallel" meetings will have same agenda so one may choose the time/place which works best for him/her. It is totally fine to visit both as well ;) We'll see (based on RSVPs) if that makes sense. We'll skip the "Let's meet-2" meetup and will start with next one, but you are free to suggest to have it too.
S2. It might make sense to schedule N meetups during the week(s) each dedicated to particular part of the test. Let's discuss that on the upcoming meetup.
P.S. Sorry for so many words in this message, trying to make the meetup accessible & effective for everyone.
P.S.P.S. It is much more fun to discuss things during meetings than write/read so many text ;)
You are welcome:)
We were thinking about bringing laptops so we can take test on it.
Although we didn't figure out what we will use as a test: practice on-line test, test on a disc or from a book. So bringing a book is also a good idea.
And don't forget your ID in case they ask for it in the library.
Hi, Kristina,
I'm just wondering have you been able to secure a room for this group at the NY Public Library on Saturday? Please let us know if you need any help from us. We certainly don't want to leave all the works and responsibility to you. I look forward to seeing all you folks on Saturday.
Hey can we meet later on saturdays like 2 or later on tuesdays like 6? I can't make it both times because they are too early :(
^Kristina said there's another time slot at 5pm I think for the same Day. Does that work for you?
Hao, actually I haven't thought about it. The library opens at 11, so I hope we will find a place for us. However, I would appreciate If you (or someone else) get information whether we need to secure a room or not.
Philo, as Sara wrote there is another meeup that duplicates the one on Saturday. I've already changed the time to 6 pm. You are welcome to suggest time/location that works best for you http://www.meetup.com/ny-gre/events/50118452/![]()

Hi, Kristina, I've found this link (http://www.nypl.org/node/58071
) on New York Public Library's website for their room reservation service. AND IT'S FREE!! I've also filled out an application form on that link for our meeting this Saturday. However, the library's policy also mentions that no reservation will be conformed until a staff from their office reached me. And they only allow applicants to use the room for two hours AT MOST for each application.
But I'll make sure that I get back to you and everyone else in our group once I heard anything back from the library. I also encourage you to use the same link to reserve a study space for your Tuesday group. AND IT'S FREE!! SO WHY NOT?
Hi. So, I got an email back from the New York Public Library, saying that the time that I requested is unavailable. Now it seems like we would have to randomly choose a spot in the library when we get there on Saturday or come up with some other suggestions for places to meet.
Hao, thank you very much for your help:)
Yeah, looks like randomly picking the time and sending requests isn't a good solution. That's surprising that we can't see what time is available...
If there is a possibility to choose a single spot in the library instead of a room that should be fine too: we could ask everyone to reserve it for themselves. If not, then we will have to find another place as we cannot rely on seats being available.
May be there's a good place near the library? Then we could first try to sit in the library and if we fail, we'll use a nearby place as a backup.
Okay I posted up my ideas and thoughts on places nearby the library in the discussion page since it can't all fit in one comment.
Mid-manhattan library should be okay. I guess we should reserve a table on the fourth place because that's where we can get the most wifi and outlets if we're bringing laptops.
Hey, some great insight about the locations from Sara (thank you!): http://www.meetup.com/ny-gre/messages/boards/thread/20004...![]()
. And one of the places she mentioned is near the library if I'm not mistaken..
Do you guys think we will be too noisy for a library? I think we may ;)
If we are going to be noisy it might makes sense to skip the library or (a crazy thought) just complete test (part) there as silence will help at this point, and then proceed to the cafe nearby.
I think we should try the library first. If the librarians say anything, we can always take the exam portion first and then head out to a cafe or something to discuss our difficulties and why we got some things wrong, etc...
Hey Guys, I just joined this group and wanted to know if anything was confirmed for Saturday morning? As I was reading through the messages I noticed that meeting was supposed to be held at the Mid-Manhattan Library but I'm not sure if that's confirmed. Looking forward to meeting you all :)
Welcome on board!
We are heading to the library first (see meetup location). If we can't find place to sit there (couldn't make reservation, read above) we will try one of these places:
- Cafe Metro or
- Schwarzman Building (not sure about this one)
which are very close. For those who will be late we will try to put information about where we landed here in comments or we'll just change meetup location.
Reminder: pl bring your IDs and some study materials for practicing test (laptop/book)
Thanks so much Kristina and Hao for all of this. Also Hao thanks for setting up the Drop box. I'm going to post a couple of things on there. See you all Saturday!
Where are we meeting in the library? It's a pretty big place xD
Agreed. I'm on my way now so we can maybe meet on the front steps and then go in. Reality is that we may have to split up but hopefully we can find something.
I think the question now is.... is everyone bringing laptops or some material to study or is anyone going to need to use computers they provide?
I brought a laptop... Are you here? I'm around the corner getting food you can call me at 5034732943
I'm in the back, on the right side (when you come out of the elevators) , on the fourth floor. There's a couple of good seats here and I think there are enough outlets. There are five available outlets on the extension by my table and a few mini tables for people to work on. But if some of us need to use computers they have, I think maybe another location would be best.
Okay cool. I'm scarfing down this bagel put front and will be up in a minute. Look out for a girl with short hair a brown leather jacket and chuck Taylor's on

Princeton Review is offering one free practice exam if you register on their website if anyone's curious. I think it's timed too, so it'll help you pace yourself.
But in general, there are a ton of resources for free online GRE practice tests.
Okay I'm on the third floor. There doesn't appear to be a fourth. Do you mind texting or calling my phone?
lol okay. Take your time, I don't think everyone is here yet. I'm on a laptop in the back table wearing a wool/acrylic brown sweater and I have my hair up in a bun with glasses. and a Google bag lol.
P.S. Wifi is slow!! Might be hard to work on an online practice exam. Let's see how it goes.
There are four of us here..... Do you know the name of the room you're in?
Hao and Kristina are outside I'm inside on the top floor in the large room with all of the lamps on the tables. If you would like to simply call that would work too. I'm planning on getting started soon.
We are on the third floor in the south hall reading room in seats 506 and around that.

Okay, what should I bring to the meetup? GRE book (does it matter the brand? e.g. princeton, kaplan, etc...). Are we taking the exam on our laptops or..?
Thanks for hosting the meetups! :D
