I think you need to spice up the format a bit. First suggestion is to have a meetup every two months, you can get much better speakers that way. I like the idea of something along the lines of the instructables guy -- talking about a concept and not really demoing a web 2.0 business. I think there are a lot of interesting people willing to give a mini 5 minute talk on a tech related concept. Perhaps some spoken editorials, experience anecdotes, emerging trends, social behavior, etc. I think that scott is a great mc. I think its funny when he sums up the presenter's long winded self explanation down to about 4 words. I think that he should engage the audience more. For example, I think that some members in the audience are pretty interesting. If a guy is asking some pretty interesting questions, Scott could ask him to come up to the stage and introduce himself -- or interview him. I think that would be very entertaining and interesting. I have more thoughts. not enough charactrs!

  • NY Tech Meetup

I did not check out the profiles of those who planned to attend before the event. And I could not find out who they were and what they were there for at the event. So I feel it was less of a meet up as it was a conference.

Those in the audience seeking to learn about important technology changes, peers with whom to exchange and expand on ideas and to deploy innovative, breakthrough applications in promising business areas left unsatisfied on all counts. Too much glib talk and not enough effort or structure that elicit the ideas of super sharp Computer Scientists, makes them comfortable there and gives them a reason to come back.

The organization focuses on innovation, allows companies small and large to promote themselves to a participating audience that not only supports in numbers but really has a vested interest in the technology advancement and betterment of NY but to everyone we are able to reach. Last night there were many instances of grand applause and with much reason. The speakers presented concepts and ideas that were relevant, exciting, and innovating which resulted in the excitement and appreciation of those who attended. This is one Meetup non-participants should check out if they have the opportunity. Time and time again, I have seen the sponsors sitting in the audience right beside us, willing to meet the participants and supporting the events they have committed themselves to supporting. It's not often that you will see sponsors in attendance every time and which is a show of how important it is to them to help the growing community of Tech entreprenuers in NY.

good topics, fast presentations, snarky response. i feel that a single presentation machine with pre-loaded presentations all done with PDF would make the experience a bit more polished. cut down on the snarky responses and enable a better visual with people not acting like a 10th grade homeroom session. it's not about changing people - it's about presenting the material with a little more seriousness and respect. you guys put up a great event. if you want to build up the NYC tech community - let's take it a bit more seriously.

There is a tremendous feeling of solidarity and 'we're all in this together' that is really encouraging, combined with the inspiration of seeing great ideas brought to life (and occasionally not so great, but the great thing is that they are being brought to life regardless). The New York-centricity is terrific - exemplified by NYCSeed's determination to help New York-born ventures - and a nice counterbalance to what can often feel like the domination of Silicon Valley. The accessibility of each demo-er and speaker is great too, and all in all these meetings send one out into the night newly revved-up and determined to make great things happen.

I've come to a couple meetings and think they are great. I wonder if we couldn't add a bulletin board for individuals who are looking to connect - looking for collaborators on the technical or business front etc. I find that it's hard to actually talk to people during this event and meeting at a bar afterwards is not always the best way either. Thanks either way for putting on a great event.

  • NY Tech Meetup

Thanks for organizing it, and keep doing what you're doing! In Silicon Valley, I used to attend the accu-usa.org's monthly group. They had 1-2 hour long presentations, often introductions, to technical topics. I learned a tremendous amount there in the 3 years I attended, and still haven't found an equivalent club here. If this group spins one like that off, I'd like to hear about it.

    Bill on Jul 12, 2006.

  • NY Tech Meetup

Networking seems to be the thing most desired. The pitch session format minimizes that.

Ken Berger on Jul 12, 2006.

As a newbie it's hard to judge off the bat, but it certainly made a very positive first impression. Thank you for organizing this!

I will certainly continue to attend! I really enjoy networking and hearing about opportunities in the world of tech...

    getpayd on Mar 8, 2006.

  • NY Tech Meetup

It has been suggested that groups should splinter off on specific topics - I am not sure if this is to maybe to reduce the size of this group? If it is then I think people like the fact that this is so wide open topic wise and maybe it should be run more often to reduce the numbers if they become out of control for the venues we have.

Andy Lister on Feb 8, 2006.

  • NY Tech Meetup

We were told to meetup afterwards for drinks at New Gate Tavern. Turned out the venue was closed. It's Newgate-gate! HEHE. great event, thanks.

Benjamin Bloom on Feb 8, 2006.

  • NY Tech Meetup

Please do not split up this group! It's great to get a number of very different interests and topics in one session, diversity of profiles is the necessary condition for brainstorming and networking.

I love the fact that it is so vauge, that going in I really didn't know what to expect, and at next month's meeting, the affair could easily be entirely different.

Simon Hova on Jan 3, 2006.

  • NY Tech Meetup

Technologists looking to share ideas and network. I found the group to be very friendly and the technology presentations were all very interesting and informative. This is a really innovative group of people. Overall, a pretty impressive group.

    David on Nov 1, 2005.

  • NY Tech Meetup

This group seems to be more about promotion then about new technology, which is cool, but misleading. I was expecting to see more discussion about how and what is being done on the internet and less of this is what I'm trying to sell you.

Avi Flombaum on Nov 1, 2005.

  • NY Tech Meetup

I did enjoy the presentations, but unfortunately didn't have time to hang out afterwords

Boris Boroda on Jun 8, 2005.

this meetup is now shrinking in size, but the new size feels better and remaining people seem higher in quality.

concerned that if it gets any bigger it should be broken up into multiple meetup groups, otherwise it might become too unwieldy.

  •  I was surprised to see that my issue below is still relevant. It was made about a meetup close to a year ago Whats with the quality control on the speakers. Some of the best so far combined with one that you should have gonged off the stage last week, much less invited him back again to torture us again.

  •  There is an odd disconnect between the crowd and the presenters: the presenters are very technical, but the crowd is very biz. I thought it would be somewhat the other way around.

  •  This was my first shot at a meet-up. I give Scott credit for keeping the agenda moving along--but if you want serious people at this event you'd better ratchet up the professionalism.
