The NY Tech Meetup could be more than an event.
Should we be more of an Organization?
What needs of the NY tech community could we serve?
What could we do for the NY tech industry?
What's the potential of the NY Tech Meetup?
How should we run?
How do we ensure fairness?
How would we be a distinctly 21st century Organization?
Should we bother? Is this important?
How do we move forward?

The goal of the meeting is to come up with ideas together and establish a plan for next steps.

Requirements to Attend:
1. You must have attended a NY Tech Meetup in the past.
2. You agree to actively participate in this meeting. There's not enough physical space to accommodate those who only want to observe.
3. You agree to respect other participants, such as by not over-participating.
4. Because of limited capacity -- and the need to ensure RSVP'ers genuine interest and attendance, you must pay $20 online to RSVP, but you will receive $20 cash upon attendance. Flakes won't get their money back.

    Several thoughts on where we are with Tech NY are on the message board thread: http://www.meetup.com/ny-te... There are questions on if we should broaden and/or partition the purpose of the group, possibly nto SIGs. There are some Why/"What is the purpose of the group?" questions before we get to the what we should do and finally how we should do it and with what governance model.     I see that the 30 spots are full.. are we then assuming that the 30 early birds have the very best ideas? Maybe a more creative entry scheme is in order...

    I have a conflict, but I am interested in the agenda. I hope you will publish the notes and make them the basis for a broader online discussion. One question I don't see here: how are you measuring the success of the NY Tech Meetup today? By membership / attendance? By the number of companies / applications that launch at NY Tech Meetup? Personally, I'm interested in a forum that is less demo-centric and more conducive to offline networking.

    • “ There was lively and interesting debate with a lot of enthusiasm and concern. Of course the process inevitably looses a lot of the comments and I don't know what proportion was really captured. Hopefully there will be follow up discussion in the threads. ”
    • “ The emphasis was on how to promote and encourage startups that can help make NYC the best place to build great Internet applications. I particularly appreciated Scott's emphasis on building sound businesses that are more than advertising-based, wishful thinking. ”
    • “ Bottom line there needs to be 1 a living breathing person that is invested in being the heart, soul and spokesperson 2 a reason d'etre: it was articulated at the end of the meeting... making ny a great place for entrepreneurs 3 a self perpetuating group of programs to keep the 7500 interested [the 4-600 already r [eg health ins; a regular weekly list of job seekers and jobs by category: consultant email on tues, it on wed, etc; a directory of services for members and allied members 4 a small monthly dues 4 members just to belong [cull the waste]; monthly dues for allied members 5 simple structure to start 3 "core" form different disciplines admin, tech, mktg, event plnr; each picks 2 others to flush out the structure and beginning programs; the group gives online feedback to the developing structure 6 once settled its tried... what doesn't work change ”

It seems we all agree that we need to cultivate and nurture the NY Tech ecosystem and that we are confident that the group has the assets needed to make NY a respected tech hub in the worlds eyes. ”
    • “ i think a survey would have been interesting, perhaps a survey can be generated from tonights comments. there are may spin off groups which can created from the main group. i would like to see a way to generate the knowledge from the mailing lists into some sort of wiki we are a small fish in a big pond, perhaps success stories created from this meetup is a good story. someone has to own this, and its a full time job. many of these questions were raised from the WWWAC board meetings. Its all about survival and doing it easier in NYC, the energy capital of the world. ”
