August 2009 NY Tech Meetup - August?!

Historically we've taken a break in August, but how could we do that while the NY Tech Meetup is so hot?!

August's NY Tech Meetup will be just as big and bad (Michael Jackson "bad") as the rest of them, with demos coming from:

Blip.tv showing off their just launched new platform
Andrew Baron, of Rocketboom, will show off Magma
WellcomeMat also unveiling their new platform
Comixology showing off the future of comic books
Hunch will help you decide anything you want
& long-time demoer Will Carlough will show off Translation Party!

See you there!

It could have been better, nothing amazing tonight, but watching that one set flame out did provide some entertainment and discomfort for the night. ;)

Nate did a superb job of keeping things moving along, despite problems. Post-meeting gathering info being posted was appreciated, although last night I didn't have the time. I also liked the brief teaser about next month's presentations.

Would have liked to chat about Hunch, but the presenter was surrounded. Her presentation and lively style stood out last night.

WOW! My first one and I can't wait to attend more and to eventually present.
A full auditorium in August says a lot about the power and caring of the New York and Tri-state tech community.

Great speakers, well managed / herded by Nate
  • Chris Munns
Some solid demos, some not so solid demos.
  • Ray Eitel-Porter
I was surprised that there wasn't more focus on business models and why people really need the tools.
  • Sara S
Thought-provoking, fun and well-managed. Great job!

Great format and decent venue. The presenters were entertaining and it was a good array of companies/ideas. I think $10/pp is a little high just to cover web and space costs. The presentation was teeny compared to the size of the auditorium - was a bit hard to see the sites/details from the middle of the auditorium.

presentations weaker than usual, fewer products generating excitement.

Some of the presentations were weak and some of the tech problems seemed a bit Amateurish. The combination of both Mag.ma and Blip.tv in the same presentation was a nice touch and it was great to see Hunch get demoed. Overall it was good.

I enjoyed seeing what was happening in NY's startups. There is clearly a groundswell of ideas and innovation and I am encouraged to see what develops there over the next several years. Video is clearly a hot topic as so many of the projects presented were video based. I especially like the idea of passing each of the projects through the question of "why do we need this?"

I loved it, I'm so glad I found this meetup. Thank you for specifying where the bar was for afterwards. Last month I couldn't find it. Please remind presenters that not all of us may be able to see what is on screen, they might consider reading it or zooming in. Excellent mix of information available.

Great line-up of speakers. Sound quality uneven; venue not great for socializing.... (but I said so already!)
  • Randy Castleman
Love the lo-fi nature of nytm. DON'T get too slick!
  • Travis Millman
No WiFi. Amatuerish A/V management. Uneven participants. Need to get the qaulity up!

First time. Fun presenters. It was a little bit difficult to know what people did or were interested in with so many people milling about with just names and companies to go by. Perhaps tables describing certain topics people could gather around so as to include us newcomers who aren't buddy-buddy with anyone yet?

    Translation Party FTW!
  • Frank Rimalovski
Other than Welcome Mat (one of the worst i've seen), it was great.
  • David Oliver
a great bunch of presenters tonight

    Interesting ... my first time.
  • Andrew Ackerman
Love Will Carlough. Cool ideas, funny delivery.

    Nice and fun!

Well, it was my first and was fun. BUT - as a founder of a very young startup i came to talk to investors in the crowd and currently this type of networking is impossible there...

some good, some bad this time. nate, you have good presence and style. question: do the rules apply the same to everyone? do they apply at all? that's all up to you, just want it to be clear. meantime you need a new sound person, but you knew that.

i loved translationparty.com. was a good fun break for the brain. thx for including!
  • Teresa Uthurralt
Excellent presentations....so many interesting business and some comedy to boot!

Several of the tools (BlipTV, hunch) looked pretty relevant to today's market needs. Would have liked to see one or two more. However, I'm curious how the Local Love app got on there. Technical errors aside, the presenters offered no story as to why the tool relevant or valuable to any community. The energy of the audience was great and Nate did a fantastic job moderating. Will definitely attend the next one!

Presenters need to be a little more structured in their demos, etc. They need to be prepared to answer the basic questions like "why do we need this", "what additional uses do you see for your product/site/etc.", and "how are you going to make money?" so the audience or Nate doesn't need to ask. At the same time, presenters need to be given an ample amount of time and I felt a few of them were rushed offstage (Blip.tv, Magma) just as they were getting to some of the more interesting features of their products. Meanwhile, hunch.com was given more time than they should have gotten. I understand that the format is structured so presenters don't run on forever, but it's inconsistent between presenters. All in all, an interesting and diverse set of demos that were interesting and enjoyable. Looking forward to the next meetup.

    The tech just wasn't inspiring..

Blip.TV (liked the "where do I lose viewers" feature) and Hunch were nice. The Translation Party hilarious. However, for a third time in a row, the registration guys did not have my name and I had to pull the receipt on my phone.
