December NY Tech Meetup

December is going to be a great Meetup!

We'll start the night with a few quick NY Tech Minute pitches from:
Chocri
Dr. Chrono
SoupFly
Larva Labs and their Intelligent Home Screen

Then we'll hear a talk from Josh Silver about Net Neutrality.

And we'll close the night with our regular 5 minute demos from these hot startups:
HotPotato
VodPod (also showing off Laminate)
The folks at ZURB showing off Notable & ItsScrumptious
Ogmento

October's NYTM had amazing post-event networking because the bar was publicized beforehand, and also Designer Pages' generously buying drinks. Hopefully in the future, the post-drinks venue can be publicized beforehand and mid-event, including the address? Can we find a venue that has a bar? I'd pay more for that.

These websites are not companies. They are tools and gimmicks. They don't make money. SoupFly for example simply steals information from the nyc.gov site and yelp.com.
I come if I see presenters who have a business model. I'm interested in business, not software that makes no money.

I was hoping to hear more about the startups. Unfortunately, they only had 5 minutes. Maybe give them 10 min.

This was my first NY Tech Meetup. I had expected more time to socialize and network with other colleagues, but did enjoy the presentations that were made. I guess I had assumed that there was 15-20 minutes of comments and presentations and then open time for networking, instead of the 45 minutes of presentations. I'll plan accordingly, going forward.

Notable and Ogmento. The rest I could have slept through.

Seemed a little shaky and the one minute events seemed too fast. Was not so happy that one of the principal companies presenting was from California. It is the NY Tech Meetup and this company should have been relegated to the 1 min. slots so a NY company could present. It felt to me that favors were being handed out for presenting and I did not like that at all. Is the purpose of the meetup to promote NY Tech startups or to promote the portfolio of favored VCs? I think the former.

My first one and i thoroughly enjoyed it.

Though the discussion on net neutrality was a bit boaring and occupied too much of the meetup's time.
  • Erica Heinz
the net neutrality thing was interesting but really dry
  • Bernie Kahn
While the long interview/speech on Net Neutrality was an interesting topic, having this before any of the 5 minute presentations killed the energy level. Audience was more polite than the usual enthusiasm; post meeting networking was murmurs rather than loud buzz. Chocri was fun to hear, but what was tech about this? Their web site was nothing unusual.
  • Troy Sechrist
Decent presenters, but thought there would be more networking opportunities.
  • David Kamien
Worthwhile to see new startups and meet new people.

Being stuck in back office for so many years, this meetup was a fantastic wakeup jolt of energy. Such a pleasure to see people's passion and hard work on display. Thank you to presenters and organizers!

some very interesting new things, my plus one also found some great ideas presented

Well organised. I thought net-neutrality debate was the least interesting part. Great idea to force participants to speak to person on left and right. Suggestion: It would be nice if there was better wifi access and people could be commenting and discussing real time via twitter. Thanks for a well organised event - this was my first time attending.
  • Dean Collins
the keynote was ok but could have been longer the companies pitching were ok but could have been better (and more of them). I feel like the newtech meetup is 'rushed'
  • Phil Wang
net neutrality bit was a nice departure from norm. tech minute demos seemed like tech 20-second demos.. didnt feel like it was enough time to get a substantive demo. ogmento was super cool.

The Net Neutrality discussion needed to be more focused as it wandered too much

Loved the organization and execution. Well done on the timing.
  • Jon Thornton
Discussion of net neutrality went waaaaay too long. NY Tech Minute presentations are still great, and Ogmento absolutely killed it. So some good and some bad this month.
  • Vishal
First time to the meetup...impressed...i live far in jersey...so maybe if we start a bit early say around 6 pm, i can interact more and network with people. Overall nice to see the demos, talk and announcements. Will be back in Jan for sure.
