Re: [newtech-1] List stats

I think this listserv is of tremendous value. It's astounding that other meetups don't use this. Such a great resource.

Hey Yaakov -- absolutely!

As an assistant organizer, I have access to the Meetup group's stats which, unfortunately, aren't very detailed. As far as I can tell, Meetup doesn't tell you how many folks are subscribed to the mailing list -- though they do provide an estimate as to the number of "active members". This number appears to be ~5,000.

Announcements go to all members who haven't opted out of notifications; this includes all ~19,000 people. From my experience running the newsletter (as of 1-2 years ago), some[masked] folks will click links in these announcements. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to learn much more than that.

We can try running some data collection routines against the listserv archives to see how many folks start threads and reply to threads. Other than that, I'll poke around to see if there's a way to get better information. I'm thinking of conducting a poll shortly which should help us better understand the make-up of the community.

Hope this helps,

Hi Brandon...

That sounds great. But can we start off by getting some list stats? Specifically, how many members are subscribed to receive emails on the list. This will give us a sense of how many "engaged" members we have to work with.

I'm going to try get the listserv more attention -- I also think we need more online resources to help members connect and network. Let me know if you have any specific suggestions; I'm going to try to get a UserVoice or some such so we can pool ideas and collaborate more closely.

That's always befuddled me. Meetup's features include a listserve, but many organizers do not use it--myself included. Thanks for the reminder and I'm certainly going to employ the list in 2012 for my WordPress Meetup Group.

I'm subscribed to other tech meetups, and the conversations are generally around the meetup itself. Given that the meetups happen once a month, maybe it's not a bad idea to publicize that in between the meetups, the "socializing" actually happens through the mailing list:)

Then, on the spur of the moment, I enabled the receiving of emails and ever since then I cannot bring myself to turn it off:) The discussions are always very educational, engaging and, more importantly, always feel open to join and to contribute.
