Re: [newtech-1] Comcast's proposed download bandwidth caps

Let's see... Last year I watched the entire season of 24 from the web for free.  Downloaded my first iTunes movie rental last week.  CNN has lots of video content.  I'd say I'm off cable TV in a couple of years.  Landline has been gone for 2 years.

It's already over for the phone and cable companies.  Big drop off in business within 5 years.  In 10 years, it will all be over the Internet.

Do you really believe that the bandwidth is that expensive?  I don't.  Comcast is afraid that you will start using Skype -- removing their phone play, then on demand movie downloads will be the norm and you will dump their T.V.

If they start to make you pay by the amount of bandwidth you consume then their other services don't look that expensive.

ISPs need to be neutral bandwidth carriers and not have a vested interested in what flows down the pipes.  Gluttons make us all look bad, but once metered service becomes the norm we will lose choice and become subject to the same crappy programming decisions that have made 60% of primetime reality TV.

Chad:

To quote SAI:

Downloading game patches uses a bunch of bandwidth once in a while, but normal [World of Warcraft] game play tops out around 30-60 kilobytes/second, or maybe a[masked] megabytes an hour run rate, according to one blog. Another user says normal usage is closer to 1-5 megabytes per hour. Continue to play until your eyes bleed.

I guess you can extrapolate from there.
