Just negotiate with the banks on fees. We are with Chase and told them we would go somewhere else if they charged us fees, so they dropped them.

I used Chase as they allowed us to combine business, personal and 401k balances to reach some sort of "silver" status (can't remember what they called it) which gets us free checking, etc.
The branch over in the East Village (think it was 4th Ave and 9th Street) was real accommodating in setting everything up.
