Actually, you can use bbPress without Buddypress as a straight closed forum. It's just another Wordpress plugin. You don't need Buddypress for it (although, you can if you want). Otherwise your site is just another Wordpress site.

Room for Debate

Well, they're reloading the page and not using jQuery to toggle between the debate participants or AJAX to populate the content, but it's a start.

Tony, I’m not sure which page of the NYTimes site you’re referring to?

Thanks to everyone for their help with this. I appreciate the ideas.

Sorry - hit send by accident.

The best best is to mimic how the New York Times does this. Basically, you've got to display the post of each author who blogs into a category. Then you pull in the posts by category and author and display them with some jQuery action to flip between the posts an load them using AJAX.

You load those posts in a custom.php page you create and then slap in the comments engine below the posts.

I haven't seem a plugin that does this yet, but if you search the terms of the section that the New York Times does this in, maybe you'll come up with a hit.

I still use Intense Debate for comments because I'm not convinced Facebook comments is a good idea, even though it has proven to increase audience engagement. Just hard to fix on one solution that forces people to use Facebook, even I they don't want to. So, I'm using both on certain posts for now.

How about bbpress, the Buddypress forum that works with Wordpress? That might work well for you.

Basically you want something like LiveScribble or CoverItLive where non contributing viewers see the posts but cant add content however I don’t know if they have any “special integration” into wordpress but basically its just an iframe so easy to do.

Thanks. This is an interesting app, but not exactly what I’m looking for. Here’s what we’re trying to do. We want to have 5 experts and a moderator discuss one topic area. The 5 experts would present their ideas, and then respond to each other in a closed forum. Outside comments would be welcome, but they wouldn’t be the primary part of how the discussion is displayed.
