Ah, wait...I thought the comments were ONLY appearing at the bottom of the page for the combined set of posts, when in reality, each post has its own comments engine.

That means there's not fancy going on here. It simply just displaying posts to a category and switching the posts in the left sidebar.

Your right, that's very easy to do.

I would think there has to be a way to combine the comments for all posts into one set of comments, so that everyone can discuss the cumulative posts and not just each post individually. Maybe this is where a "real time" chat or Twitter-like feed for comments on all posts might be cool.

Copying what Room for Debate is doing in WP seems pretty easy to me, you have a prompt/introduction created by an admin and that admin chooses which writers/users can answer the prompt, then those users write their posts. The posts are displayed together with the prompt to end-users, who can then comment on each post. On NYT comments are allowed on those individual posts but not on the original prompt itself, which is what WP would do by default.

Well, they're reloading the page and not using jQuery to toggle between the debate participants or AJAX to populate the content, but it's a start.
