There’s two guys I have my eye on at the moment as I track Microsoft’s possible resurgence: Sinofsky (who is gone) and Panos Panay. They’re respectively responsible for Windows 8 and Surface. I agree he’s divisive and caused enormous friction and pain, but look at the results.

Read multiple stories on this and the main 'theory" is that everyone hated working for him and he was pushing to be next CEO of MSFT. Rumors are that he was scheduled to take over the mobile phone division and that senior executives in that area were threatening to quit.
From everything read, the picture is that he was very polarizing figure.
