not an answer to your question but related: foursquare used the bump api's for a while then decided to chuck it and roll their own. I guess at that scale, it's not that hard to reproduce the effect and maybe they wanted something slightly different. also, they had all the geo-location info already, so figuring out how to pair simultaneous bumps was probably that much easier to do.
