RE: [newtech-1] Protocol for job posts

From: user 1.

Charles,

The email clearly states we’re looking for Java Developers, and clearly says if you are interested to contact me directly at the email address and phone number provided. I provided the web address as another option for people to see more information and to apply online should they chose.

Again, sorry if I offended anyone (and thank you to the people who have sent me emails expressing interest).

Chris

That Priceline announcement was worse than a job posting!

It's one thing to see that Priceline is looking for, say, Ruby developers.

It is much worse to get an email saying Priceline is a great company, come to our website and look for a job here.

This is just pure promotion and advertising for Priceline.

This is a much worse offense.   This is really just spam mail.

The correct protocol is THIS IS NOT A JOBS BOARD.

Chris,

With all due respect, that is exactly what I want to avoid. I doubt anyone is going to beat up on you because you're from Priceline. Other recruiters don't get the same treatment as you and that, to me, is unfair.

Ross,

If (when) the protocol gains traction, all you will have to do is to create a filter saying all mails starting with NYTM_Job go to trash. Otoh, someone like me might want to read such emails every once in a while to see what's out there.

I think such a protocol can be beneficial to everyone.

Thank you Sai. I would hope that others will see the distinction between my email and a third party recruiter sending something blind out.

A) I'm not a recruiter.

B) I see some value in seeing job offers come through on this mailing list

B1) I don't want to trawl the jobs board. I'm not thaaaat interested.

C) I don't want this list flooded with job offers because it is pretty amazing as it is right now.

Given these constraints, I'm hoping we as a community can adopt an unwritten, mutually beneficial protocol when it comes to job posts.

1) Subject starts with "NYTM_Job:". This will help us set up filters moving such emails away from the main mail flow.

2) People identify themselves as recruiters clearly.

I'm pretty sure priceline.com (they posted a job here today) and other such well known companies (wasn't some fashion magazine trying to hire via NYTM a few weeks ago?) will get a free pass while other less well known recruiters will get their head blown off.

As a group, I'd rather level the playing field for all job posters rather than accept the implied credibility of a well known brand names. Adoption is obviously voluntary but if we self police and encourage better citizenship from recruiters, it's most definitely a win-win IMHO.
