Re: [newtech-1] Patents on Code

The problem with a provisional patent is that your actual patent must be identical to the provisional one. If it is different, then the provisional patent will not help and you will then have wasted both time and money.

Not all tech startups have IP that can be patented.

Hi Brian!  I too am a startup and write away I filed a provisional patent.  You have 1 year to file for the actual patent from the time you get the provisional.  A patent protects your invention and is important to have if anyone wants to buy the company one day.  Cost on average 10k. TM also protects your name/logo...$1,500.00 approx.  You should talk to several patent attorneys before Making a decision.  Good luck on the journey!

Hi everyone, am a new business and we are starting to pitch for funds and everyone is asking me if we have a patent on our code and trademark on our name.

Anyone have any advice for the patent side of things--how necessary, at what stage you need it and how much it will cost.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sincerely,

Brian
