I concur.  I have used google apps free edition solely for mail for
several domains.  All I use is the mail service though (point my MX
records over but keep all other services under my control).

I only recall one outage for a few hours and I think the pros outweigh
the cons.  You should note they are slowly pruning down the free
service so keep the cost of the standard service in mind.  Of course
you need to asses your other requirements too (security, remote
access, 3rd party integration, cost, clients, functionality, ads if
using the free service...).
