Re: [newtech-1] emailing to a list

Good point Andrew.

I needed some advice in this area (my firm was deciding between going
with an email service or building our own emailer) and Matt Weinberg
was kind enough to share some of his expertise. The main point I took
from our conversation was that it's a big mistake to go it alone.

Since a spam rate of only .1% is enough to get you blacklisted - and
the major players like Gmail and Yahoo don't take calls from just
anyone with an email list - you really do need an email service to
prevent blacklisting, let alone ensure whitelisting. And once you're
on the watch list, it becomes very difficult to send out mail with
your branding and from your ISP. We might be able to build a program
to send out emails very nicely, but we can't build a program to ensure
they'll get through.
