Things have cultures, Businesses, do. So do Mailing lists. This list, at least in terms of those who post in primarily male. Consider it a dive bar. The good the bad and the ugly its what it is. And it's not going to change. You aren't going to change its culture just like you aren't going to change the culture of a bunch of Wall Street Traders or those on a sports team or those guys who go out drinking together. In the same way that the culture here would never invade a girls night out, you should respect what we have built. If it works for you great, if not. It's not for you.

and Lora, you signed up for the list, you should be able to figure out how to reach the administrator. Its not that hard and members of the list shouldn't have to do it for you.

Maggie,

Happy to see you go in disgust. I'm sure you're better than all of us. It's a joke when people huff and puff and leave a mailing list. Since when were Internet mailing lists ever polite? The best of the list always comes after a blow up like this. So, you'll simply just miss out. Bye, bye!

100% agree with both Justin and Lora.  What a joke this forum has become.  Sad really.  I have no idea how some of you actually even work in tech.  It's a disgrace to the industry, and New York City in particular.

Good luck all.  I'm now removing myself from this d list.

The idea that courtesy and respect are just an option is completely foreign to me. It is insane that threads related to this issue are the most active on this 'tech list.' Wow. Simply, W.O.W.

Julie, I hope as this thread unfolded, you understand the spirit in which I intended my first response.

Your wish for a more peaceful discussion is admirable, its just not the first time its been suggested, and you can see the animal it brings out of some people.

Hi Ross -
I have been a silent reader on the list for nearly two years now so I'm well-aware of the can of worms that I may be opening. Thank you for your warning. I've been on many list-servs in the food world for the last dozen years or so and have pretty thick skin now.

One of the main reasons I chose to write this note is because I mentor a lot of women in business and felt that the way Cyndi was treated may silence other women who would like to post but are afraid to. Before anyone gets up in arms about this comment: I realize that the may less-than diplomatic comments doled out here often have nothing to do with gender! Frankly, I don't think that a lot of people even read the names of the people who are posting before they decide to write something nice or snarky. However, I do know how women think and many might hold back from writing on here after reading that one thread.

My point was to make it feel like anyone, regardless of gender, to feel like they could post something on here without being totally cut down. I'm not sure why asking people to be polite would be a misfire - or be in the same category as posting a job post (gotta love those threads - delete). But thanks for your honesty.

Best,
Julie

Best,
Julie

Hello Julie,

Thank you for your input to the list. I'm simply, and politely, writing to explain that this very topic has been broached like 1000 times by new people and it always becomes a many-emails-long thread that achieves absolutely nothing.  I appreciate your balls, but brace yourself; You have officially opened yourself up to an enourmous amount of patronizing comments from the snarkiest members of the list. If this in fact your first contribution to the list, I'm afraid you've completely misfired this time.  If you are in fact the glutton for punishment this email would indicate, I'd recommend posting a job opportunity or a link to your blog while you're at it.
