WinXP is the only version that is solid.  Win7 works fine but was just a giant patch from Vista, though my accountant .  Win8 is a distraction for corporate america.  They should have left Win7 alone, and made Win8 for mobile and tablet, since its more designed for that experience.   I too would promote Ubuntu or Mac if budget money allows, since it just allows you to get up and running and move forward without bloatware.
