We are hiring adults and for the most part people are responsible and conscious but no one is infallible. We dont know the people we are bringing on more than their resume and the limited interaction we have had with them. We do trust they will do the right thing and we are not going to be watching over their shoulder every hour of the day. This is equipment they will have with them and because they are outside sales they wont be in the office most of the week. So its not like we will know if they are doing anything outside of work during "office hours". I dont think though that as a company protecting its assets and creating measures to insure productivity that blocking certain sites is out of the norm. No one is saying we want to be able to record every email and conversation they are having, but we do want to have some measures of mitigating a situation before it happens. I dont think that is unreasonable or "untrusting" in any respect.

As many other people have said, spend more time hiring the right people, and trusting them to do the right thing (after being told what the rules of the road are, and the attendant penalties for breaking those rules) and spend less time trying to be a nanny. You hired adults. Trust them to act like they are adults. Them getting their work done is priority one, as long as they do so without doing anything idiotic or outlandish, you're good to go.
