Dale,
The spirit of NYC is no doubt great.
I personally see the issue you have raised as the biggest dampening factor. There are other issues as well like openness from Academia to collaborate with Start-ups (despite Columbia, NYU, NYIT, Princeton etc)

There are quite a few VCs/Angels. But they certainly lack variety and appetite for Early Investments. They want to enter after discussions you have two customers! I had a list of VCs in and around NY(which I might have to pull from my back-ups disks) but am sure one can google and find. If the list is genuinely interested, I would be happy to find it and post

All the best,
Sajniv

I'm spending the summer in NY (Brooklyn actually), but I usually reside in San Francisco. I'm involved in the tech scene there and attend a lot of social/networking events based around it, including the NewTech Meetup in SF. Anyway, while I'm out here in NY I'm putting together the plans for a new web application product that I'll be taking back west to finish up and launch. At least that was the plan. Now I'm seeing a lot more openness and genuine excitement here that I ever do back in Silicon Valley, and I'm thinking that it might be fun to move out to NY on a more permanent basis.
However, there's one thing I haven't seen discussed too much and that's funding options on the East Coast. I'd be really interested to hear from people who have raised either angel or venture capital, or from investors themselves. Just to be clear, I'm not looking to solicit for funds, I'm just trying to understand what the venture funding market is like here. If you're up for it I bet the rest of the mailing list would be interested as well, but if you'd like to just keep it private I'd be very interested in that too.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time and I look forward to the next NewTech meeting.

Dale Cook
