RE: [newtech-1] Whatever happened to micropayments?

Hi Eddie, been away for a few days so coming into this discussion late.

I think the real reason this hasn’t worked out in the USA is because of greed. One of www.Cognation.net clients is an Australian company called www.TractionPlatform.com

They have an extremely busy business in Australia and the UK of which one portion involves premium sms services as you described with your coke machine in Finland. When they looked to implement similar services here in the USA the US mobile carriers were looking for around 50% of the billing unit price in order to implement these services.

There is no way coke (or their distributors) is prepared to cut Verizon in for 50% of the transaction in order to implement this. Technology is not the issue here – it’s just management.

Micropayments in the US might be relatively dead in the water, but in other countries it is picking up steam, even though it might not be either formally known as such. Example: in Finland it is possible to pay for a Coke at a vending machine by sending an SMS message to the vending machine. The cost of the drink is added to your wireless phone bill. Nice, fast, and secure. Similar schemes are available in parts of west Africa, though not as sophisticated as the one I just referenced .

A problem still not solved, an vein still not tapped, despite years of
effort. What's the deal??
