Re: [newtech-1] Apple Watch?

My 2 other watches are G Shock solar tide watches,... one from around 10 years ago and the other just about a year old. As long as the G Shocks get light, the batteries last forever. I wear them when I'm not wearing the Apple Watch. I don't wear a watch during winter vacation in the tropics,... except departure day.

What's the big deal about "several" miles of walking?  I routinely walk 5-6 miles a day (started "commuting" on foot through Central Park this spring), and it doesn't even tire me any more.  8-9 miles a day is routine for less modern cultures (e.g. the Amish).

But, no, I don't need a watch to nanny me around and tell me exactly how much I'm walking -- pretty easy to tell in NYC what with 20 blocks per mile.

I'll keep my mechanical watch, which I can charge with a spin of my fingers...

It's crazy how much walking you have to do to achieve the Moderate goal.  Apple must figure in 30 minutes of real cardio because it doesn't make sense to require only 30 minutes of activity and what has to be several miles of walking.

I’ve had an Apple watch 3 weeks today, and so far I love it!

It’s made a big difference in my activity.  When I did the initial setup, I chose the Moderate level and this takes some effort to achieve for those of us who spend most of the day in front of a computer.  I usually end up taking a fairly long walk at the end of the day to achieve the activity goal.  I like the Stand Up reminder - again, it’s pretty easy to just be working away and forget to move.  The reminder helps a lot.

I really like the notifications for text messages, Twitter, news apps, etc.  They’re quick to see, and quick to dismiss.  I do wish that it could do more, since for many of the news app alerts, you only get a tiny bit of the story and must go to your phone for more.  It’s been liberating to leave my phone at my desk while I go away to do something else for a bit and know that I won’t miss anything.  Responding to text messages using voice works surprisingly well.  Of course, you can really only do that where others won’t be annoyed by you talking to your wrist.

I find it frustratingly slow to pull up current news stories on the CNN app.  Some appear to be cached on the watch, but otherwise it’s slow.  Pulling up current email is similar, with the disappointment that frequently you only get to see the subject, since “The full version of this message isn’t available on Apple Watch. But you can read it on your iPhone”.

I have used Apple Pay a few times (Panera, Walgreens, McDonalds) and its worked flawlessly.  I love it, just wish I could use it in more places.

Somehow I stumbled across http://www.wristly.co and signed up for their surveys.  They’ve accumulated quite a bit of early user experience data and anyone can read their results.
