All spinning disk drives fail at some point in time. Doesn't matter how cheap or expensive they are, it isn't if they fail but when they fail.
You can buil your own FreeNAS storage server and use a bunch of drives in a RAID setup. You can look at this

On the other hand if you don't want to have your NAS but just want a 1 TB portable drive, spend the money on a SSD and a 2.5 inch USB disk case like a Inateck.
You will have a reliable drive that's fast. SSD's do fail but the rate of failure is under two percent.
One of the less publicized cloud storage services out there is Backblaze and their pricing is very good.
But if in the end you just want a cheap USB external drive any of the many out there will be fine. The main differences will be in the form factor and some software that is bundled with some of them. You can pick up USB 2.0 drives for cheap now as they try and get rid of the older stuff.
Cloud based backup and storage solutions seem to be the rage as people are sold on storage as a service concept, has its pros and a few cons.

Funny, there was this thing called "privacy" -- can't remember where I left it. I'd rather set up some sort of Linux-based NAS than use 99% of cloud storage companies. Only cloud-based storage I'd consider using is one which uses strong crypto AND where the keys are known only to my machines, not to the provider.
But I set up a NAS with redundant drives from an old PC a few years ago, and it's been running fine since. PC was free, so it cost me about $150 total.
