Scott Heiferman (founder of NY Tech Meetup & Meetup.com) is hosting February's Meetup during Social Media Week. He'll be featuring new tech which addresses both the importance and overhype of "Social Media."

Submit your company/product by stating your:

1. Name and/or Company Name and logo (if you have one)
2. Demo request (1 minute pitch or 5 minute full demo)*
3. URL (to the product)
4. One sentence description ("The web app that makes your coffee and puts on your shoes with one click!")
5. Slightly longer description

* 1 minute quick demos are great for personal projects, less technical companies, and over all simple-yet-powerful products. 5 minute demos are for more complicated, fully featured, and highly innovative products. Choose wisely or we'll choose for you ;-)

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT WHO GETS TO PRESENT: The NY Tech Meetup is all about "very cool tech." This means that many sites just don't qualify -- not because they're not exciting businesses, but because they're not really doing anything technologically new. For example, if you're site is simply a CMS or database of information, it's really hard to make that interesting enough for a room of 750 geeks. If your company doesn't fit these guidelines, think about presenting your startup at a Meetup more geared towards your industry (i.e. a real estate Meetup, if you're site is "just" a database of apartments). If you still think you qualify to present, increase your chances of being selected by really explaining why your tech is cool and new, and how it would have 750 geeks on the edge of their seats.

Hey Nate,

Have an interest in applying to present but wondering if this month would be right. I'm hoping you could I'm interested in a little background on what "He'll be featuring new tech which addresses both the importance and overhype of "Social Media." Does this mean that the products you guys are looking to present are strictly "Social Media" sites? Also a bit of background on what tech is that addresses overhype would be helpful as well.

Appreciate your thoughts,

Thank you,
Sean Casey

Hi Nate,

1. BigMapple

2. We'd love to have 5 minutes.

3. http://BigMapple.com...

4. An event-driven web app channelling local, social feeds and city buzz.

5. BigMapple connects New York City residents and visitors to events taking place in our city on a daily basis. We make it easy to see what’s going on in your own neighborhood and across town with a map that shows you the location of events, and includes real-time reports from people who are already on the scene through social media feeds. From a bird's-eye view, you can see where the buzz is coming from — whether it's SantaCon, a concert, or just a typical day in Central Park.

1. Townbug NYC

2. Demo request (5 minute full demo)

3. tribeca.townbug.com | chelsea.townbug.com | LowerEastSide.townbug.com | jamaica.townbug.com | WestVillage.townbug.com

4. A Hyperlocal "Social Media" SMASHUP built for every neighborhood in NYC

Internet giants (MEETUP.COM, Twitter, Flickr, Craigslist, YouTube, etc), together for the first time on one page - tweaked and massaged to serve every local community.

On Aug. 2009 we launched a TownBug for every town in Fairfield County, CT as an experiment to see what happens when you mix Social Media and Hyperlocal. The results were amazing but nothing as surprising as when viewed on a NYC Neighborhood level.

We look forward to the opportunity of showing the NY Tech Community our Hyperlocal results and our new Mobile App.

You will notice that we integrated both Neighborhoodr and NYC.gov into TownBug (2 projects we became aware of only through attending previous Meetups.)

Hi,

1. The product I would like to demo is Semantic MediaWiki; though I also represent WikiWorks, a company that does MediaWiki-based consulting and development.

2. 5-minute demo.

3. http://semantic-media...

4. Semantic MediaWiki is open-source software that turns a wiki into a collaborative, structured database.

5. Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) is an open-source extension to MediaWiki (the application best known for powering Wikipedia) that allows for storing and displaying data in a wiki, enabling fairly complex data structures while preserving the ability for unlimited numbers of users to modify the data. Additional spinoff extensions to SMW enable creating forms, displaying data in standard formats like maps and calendars, data import and export and other functionality. SMW is already in use on hundreds of wikis, including wikis for research, corporations, government agencies and fan communities.

5. Dorthy.com let users create living pages about anything they want to learn about or achieve. Moving beyond search, Dorthy.com scours the web 24/7 for the most relevant content, and populating the page with collaborative and actionable results. The service enhances and customizes page content with each interaction, learning from a user's online activity and interests. The service incorporates social features to connect users with a community of people who want to discover the same type of information or achieve similar goals.

For example, say you want to train to run a triathlon in Maui. These pages will not only work around the clock to bring you relevant results that relate to everything about bikes, running, swimming training and getting to Maui, but it will also connect you with others that are interested in achieving that same goal.
