"Know Your Enemy" Project: Religious right wing vs. abortion rights

Malibu Diner (map)

Selected By: Diane

We will discuss the current abortion rights situation, including what the religious right wingers are doing and how abortion rights activists are fighting back.

The meeting will feature a presentation by Sarah Harper, a NYARBB member who has been doing clinic defense in the Bronx recently.

There will also be a brief presentation by Angela Mehira Gilden, a civil rights lawyer, about the legal and constitutional issues involved in abortion rights.

The "Know Your Enemy" Project aims to educate New Yorkers about the religious right wing. New Yorkers, including people in the groups scapegoated by the religious right wing (GLBT people, atheists, Pagans, etc.) tend to underestimate both the political power and influence of the religious right wing and the political power and significance of the movements that oppose the religious right wing (the women's rights movement, the GLBT rights movement, organized atheism/humanism, etc.). Here in New York, with its highly visible progressive and gay communities, it is all too easy to conclude that conservative Christianity is of no political significance whatsoever. But that is far from the truth -- even here in New York (especially the outer boroughs), let alone many other parts of the U.S.A.

Location and how to find us: We'll be meeting at a diner on 23rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, closer to 7th. (The exact address, and other details, will be visible to you once you join this Meetup group.) The nearest subway stop is 23rd Street on the 1, 2, and 3 lines (7th Avenue). Other nearby subway stops are 23rd Street on the F line (6th Avenue), and 23 Street on the E and C lines (8th Avenue). For those coming from outside the city, the diner is also near the PATH train station at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue, and it is approximately a 10-minute walk from Penn Station.

Ask a waiter for "New Yorkers Against Religion-Based Bigotry."

We'll be at a table (or possibly a booth) near the BACK of the diner. There will be some NYARBB literature on the table.
